I've had studs before. I have a set of Firestone studded tires on my lexus. They are loud. You can really hear the studs.

For the mini, I decided to go all out and get a set of nokian hakkapalitta 8. Factory studded.

One word. AMAZING. They are quiet, ride nice and super in snow and on ice.

The studs are quiet and they grip better than the Firestone.

They should. They were more than double the price. [IMG]

I have half bald 5 year old Michelin All Seasons that are awesome in the winter because my car sits in the garage most days. :ihih:

It's one of the benefits of working from home. What does suck is when it snows you cannot call out because the roads are too bad even if the Gov declairs a State of Emergency.

Most states down here don't allow studded tires anymore. Only the northern border.

I'm with Dave. If it snows a lot I just don't go anywhere.

If you're going to wear those tires, you have to rock a lift kit and huge mud flaps.

I have had 2 sets of Hakka 2's great tire, mine were not studded. I used a 195-60-15 on my Subaru & my MINI wore 175-65-15's. I'd have bought another set, but they are very hard to find locally. Buying them elsewhere & shipping them in makes them too spendy for me. We can use studded tires here Nov 1 - April 15. Even so studs are not as good on a wet or dry roads that we see here on a regular basis in winter. If I lived in the great white north I'd be having them too. I have no doubt those Hakka 8's are the state of the art in modern snow tire tech.

I had to order them from the states.
Even after the exchange, taxes and everything else... It was still $500 cheaper than buying them locally.

This is true with most studded tires.
Nokian has seemed to improve the wet dry traction by allowing the studs to compress in to the tire.
There is a sort of cushion, under the stud. I think that's what makes them so quiet on the bare roads. I'll never have any other set. In fact, I ordered another set to replace the studs on my Lexus. Even though those tires have less than 500 km on them. I'll just sell them. They are that good....
