Brakes Wheels 1st Gen Tires New rotors with old pads?

    Hi everyone,

    I traded my R56 for an '06 R53 a couple months ago and I am working my way through the list of needed repairs. It appears that the previous owner put new brake pads on before they traded it in, but the rotors are pretty much toast, they are way worn down. So my question is, can I use the fairly new pads that are already on the car with brand new rotors, or should I be springing for new pads too. I appreciate the help.

    Yep.. sure can. However be ready for possible... Brake shake. I have found out if you can do some hard stops in REVERSE, it helps seat the old pads on the new roaters..

    If it was me I would buy new pads and bed them in with the new rotors and a fresh brake flush.

    That's just me for the piece of mind that everything is new because brakes are very important.

    You'll have to change you avatar from the R56 knob :)

    Enjoy the R53. If it has the non-JCW brakes, I'd double the recommendation of new pads and rotors. The brakes are safe, but they are not over built.

    New rotors and pads, for sure. I just did the front and rear brakes on my R50. Centric rotors with Akebono pads for less than $250. A small price to pay for your safety.

    Oh, and it would probably be a good idea to do the brake fluid at the same time.

    For a couple $ more, literally, when I got mine (on Amazon), you can get the higher end high carbon centric premium rotors...akenobono pads are very nice if they meet your needs...some love the nearly dust free feature, some knock them for feel....mine took some time to bed, but felt fine as long as they were regularly used moderately hard, though after a few weeks of very light use, they felt kinda iffy, but just warmed them up, and they were back to Normal.

    I also bought mine Centric premium rotors from Amazon. :Thumbsup:

    Thanks for the input everyone. It sounds like I should go with new pads, now I just need to decide which ones to get. I got Zimmerman rotors and I have some DOT 4 fluid waiting to do a brake fluid flush at the same time. The rear brakes are still in good shape, so I'm not terribly worried about them yet.

    That all depends on the type of driving you do.

    Some spirited driving with our MINI club, maybe one or two track days a year. I had EBC Redstuff on my R56 and they were okay. I can get a good deal on EBC, Hawk, Akebono Euro for good ones, and some cheap ones like Mintex, Meyle and Textar.
