My wife and I figured that the openometer, per se, is worse than worthless. But, clearly it is pure potential--the potential of an egg about to hatch. Fortunately, ours has hatched, delivering Trevor, whom I hope to have as a driving companion for some time. (Note that he glows in the dark, which is hard to show in a photograph.)

Isn't that how cottage industries get started? Had I an openomiter, you would receive my order form forthwith.

Thanks! I'm glad that people like it. He's held on with velcro, so we figure this is "Mark 1" of a series of openometer alternatives. We'll just swap as the mood hits. With all humility, I wonder that an "accessory port" isn't a standard item on Minis or other cars! If they had the same plastic molded bit that currently houses the openometer but empty save for, perhaps, a power port or OBD socket or USB port, third party vendors would race to produce useful gizmos that could be attached to the dash. That doesn't seem like rocket science to me and would be quite consistent with Mini's "youify" philosophy.

The Openometer just needs to be read properly to be appreciated.
