Hi, Few weeks ago, my clubman S (2008, ~70K miles) broke down on the road due to excessive oil leak from a turbo line. Glad it didnt catch a fire. Towed to dealer shop and estimate was too big to pay. I did research and decided to attack the job with a help of a friend. Towed the car to private garage (paid towing out of pocket. Still good deal overall). Ordered turbo oil line from Techna-Fit | Turbo Parts (I heard this company from this board). The line ordered was 20inch line with two 12mm banjo adaptor and one end is 90 degree bend. (~$16 + shipping). Later I found out 20 inch was too long and it was installed with a loop. I guess it can be gotten away with 18 or even 16 inch. Also I purchase the extra banjo bolt and gaskets and downpipe gasket from a dealer. We took a route without putting a car in service mode. Basically three pieces of heat shields need to come off and so does downpipe. Space is very tight but it is doable. It took about 3 1/2 hrs. Car was on the lift and so it was up and down as needed. Here are few pictures.
Good info. BTW, this issue has been reported to NHTSA and is referenced on their site. May I suggest that you file a complaint regarding the oil leak on a hot turbo, the chance of a fire and the poor design of the crimp fitting that comes loose. I also suggest that you keep all of your receipts and document what happened just in case this becomes another recall.
Nice repair..... I'll bet this was quite a bit cheaper to do yourself. Nice to know it's possible without going into service mode.
Chuck, I agree but this is still MINI's issue to deal with and they continue to avoid the poor crimp fitting design. It will probably take a fire to get this closer to the forefront with NHTSA unless everyone with this issue registers a formal complaint.
^^^ Excellent point Mark..... Unfortunately, if MINI doesn't change the design, it'll probably happen again in another 75K miles. The SS braided line is a better solution IMHO....
Turbo Line leak for Mini Cooper S 2008 My 2008 MCS turbo line is leaking. My neighbor who has the same mini experienced the same problem. I haven't researched online yet. I was told the charges to repair this is $1100 from our local Mini Service Center. I'm very lost when it comes to repairs. Need anyone's advice and suggestions? Please?
It cost me $772 from my dealer. Please register a complaint with NHTSA on their web site. There are already several posted. The OP of this thread has a much better way to repair this than the dealer does.
Turbo and Timing Chain.... Hi There...I'm an original owner of a 2008 Mini Cooper Clubman. I took the car to the shop because the engine light was on. It was diagnosed with a bad turbo...even though I changed the oil every 5-7K with the designated synthetic oil. This was a hard pill to swallow at $3400.00 but it was the best option considering I owe 17K on the car and it's only worth 17K with a good turbo. So...I said okay on the repair. The shop called me on the day it was supposed to be done and said they had bad news. When they went to get the car started, the timing belt busted when it turned over and the engine is toast. So...any ideas out there? I've read about peeps with issues in the turbo AND the timing belt. HELP!!
The timing chain tensioner is a well known issue that MINI will replace if it acts up (gets noisy). There are Service Bulletins on the problem. Seems to me that MINI should 'fess up and cover the damage since its their lousy tensioner/chain reliability ..

I'm looking for a good mechanic in the bayarea to fix the turbo line leak. Does anyone know of a reliable workshop? Being a female without much knowledge about cars doesn't help. These forums really helped me gain a little bit of knowledge not much though.

2008 Cooper S Turbo Line = $1040 replacement OUCH!! I bought this Mini cooper for my daughter to get to work and back. On her way to work today she smell oil and also see smoke from the front of her car. She stopped and call me. I informed her to stay put and that I am on my way. Got there and I saw that their is indeed oil spil from the turbo. I drove myself to a closeby service dealer and whalla-------$1040 quote to fix the Turbo Oil line. It also stated that the A/C needs to be recharge due to the oil leak, ,,,,,,never heard of that, but I am no expert. We just relocated from Cali, moved into a home, still need to pay all the uility deposits (which we did not budget for) and now a wopping $1040 for a repair. Help please!! :frown5: Thanks Robbie14u

Is this a quote from the MINI dealer? Where are you located now? There might be a local MINI specialist (go to the pull down "Sponsors" tab at the top of the page and search in your state). Replaced Turbo Oil Feed Line I own a 2008 Cooper S hatchback. Two months ago I started smelling oil burning from the engine. It was really toxic and coming into the car. I brought it to Mini SF and they told me it needed a new Valve Cover gasket. They said they also noticed a leak in my axle which needed to be replaced. Total estimate, $2900.00. My car had two weeks left on the extended warranty so I told them to replace the rear brake pads and to replace anything else under the warranty only and to skip the recommended repairs. I picked up my car and still had to deal with the toxic smell. This was the last time I will ever take myc car to the dealer! I took my car to another mechanic in SSF that charges me $50 per hour labor. He said it was leaking from the valve cover, so he replaced the valve cover gasket. He said the oil had leaked near the axle but was not damaged or leaking (typical SF Mini!). My mechanic said it would take 2 weeks for the remainder oil to burn off. A month past and I still smelled the oil burning on the manifold. I decided to do some research. It turns out, Mini has a faulty product but won't admit it. The O rings on the turbo get hot and wear out very easily. If the turbo unit breaks down because of this, it costs $$$$ to repair. I learned from forums like this one, that the OEM replacement product was inferior to a product by Detroit Tuning. I decided to purchase the Detroit Tuned Turbo Oil Line SUPER Kit. It comes with: 1 Custom made Detroit Tuned turbo oil feed line w/2 Banjo Fittings & 4 Crush Washer 2 MINI Banjo Bolts 1 MINI Oil Return Line w/1 Clamp & 1 Bolt 1 MINI Downpipe Gasket 1 MINI Downpipe Clamp 1 MINI Oil Filter Housing Seal Kit 1 MINI Heat Sheild There is also an instruction download online. I brought the kit to my mechanic and they spent 5hrs putting it in. Total cost $455.00 ($175.00 for Turbo Oil Line Super kit, $250.00 labor, $30.00 BMW coolant). The car has sounds better and has way more power!
DON'T OVERLOOK THE OIL FILTER HOUSING! Anyone doing this repair, the oil filter housing gaskets also fail, and it is THE SAME JOB IF you take the nose off. it is a 20.00 gasket that could have you diving back in there 6 months later.
