I had a strange on pop up as I pulled into the parking lot at work. It was a Mini on a lift in red. Nothing strange was happening and the car was running just fine. I had no idea what this meant, so I had to look it up in the book. It said ignition failure, or a light failure. But everything seemed ok to me. Just damned odd.

That usually means the computer thinks it's overdue for service.

How many miles are on it?

Ok, looks like I was incorrect. Now I have both of these lights. Everything seems to be working perfectly. What could it be?

I think it is time for a brake fluid flush. Just a guess, but I may be right.

Open the bonnet first & check that you have enough brake fluid in the master. As pads wear fluid level drops. If that isn't it I'll stick with my first guess.

Fluid is up to the screen when I take the cap off and look really clean.

At 45,000 miles the CBS (Condition Based Service) will automatically warn that it wants the air filter element replaced. Dusty conditions can move that up.

With the ignition on, if you press and hold the lower right button on the tachometer for 10 seconds the upper panel in the tachometer will illuminate with a service item, the lower will show the number of miles left for that service item. If you push the button on the end of the the turn signal stalk, it will move to the next service item.

I don't think there's a specific icon in the upper display for the air filter, but that's probably what the light went off for, based on normal maintenance cycles for an R56.

If you replace the air filter yourself, you can reset the CBS by repeating the above, then holding the turn signal stalk button again until it shows "reset." You can then reset any service item you've just replaced.

Thank you, Bentley Service Manual. :)

So that's just the regular intake filter, right?

Why would it set the brake warning off though?

Ah, I just thought you had the e-brake on in that picture. Maybe you have worn brakes too. If you follow the steps I outlined above, it will tell you front or rear. It could also be a faulty sensor if you know the brakes are good. Also check if the rear brake sensor is seated correctly. I've had that one shake loose before. It's on the right rear.

According to the handy mini book, it's a diff light that came on the the brake wear sensor. I would think that one would go off if that were the case. But that's why I'm asking for help.

I reset using the instructions you gave and the light went off. So far so good. Maybe it was just an odd error. I used to get an ignition interlock error on my TT all the time for no reason. Cars do strange things sometimes.

You should still be under your 5 year / 50,000 mile warranty too.

If you've got time, why not swing by MAG and have them take a look? Take advantage of free stuff while you got it! :)

    Nope. :frown2:

It actually expired at the beginning of December. I'm on my own for repairs now.

In an R56 it goes bong bong bong if the e brake is up....

That is maddening when you are doing a hand brake turn. :incazzato:

My guess that I'm going on record with is it has been more than 2 years & your service nanny wants you to have the brake fluid changed.
