So weekend before last I changed the oil and filter in my 10 MCS. Everything seemed to go quite well. But I have noticed that suddenly my idle gets a little rough here and there, but more disturbing is the tapping sound. Seems to be coming from the topish area of the motor. I heard the tapping really bad in the parking garage at the gym. Not sure if it's the turbo or maybe some valve tap? Any thoughts?
Is it constant tapping? if so you can get a screwdriver and put your ear to the handle and put the point on different parts of the motor to find where its coming from. used a long screwdriver and be careful.
Yup, oem filter from our favorite eminiparts and mobil 1 high mileage 5w-30, it was all they had in the mobile 1 in 5w-30.
Has your chain tensioner ever been replaced? You have a 2010, and it may or may not have the improved tensioner.... The dealer can tell you with the VIN.... MINI claimed to have fixed this problem several times over the spread of the early model years.... Not sure when they start using the improved one in production.... If it's not getting pumped up with oil pressure, you could have extra slack in the chain.... Could be the ticking...... Just thinkin out loud....
If you do the screwdriver stethoscope on the passenger side of the engine and identify where the noise is coming from. That's where the timing chain is located.... The tensioner is pressurized by oil pressure.... The fuel injectors are also noisy.... You need to locate where the ticking is originating.... The tensioner.... if the old style.... May be replaced at N/C by the dealer.... If not, it's an easy DIY and the part cost is around $40.00 if I remember correctly... But locate the noise first....
So if I am just suddenly hearing the injectors clicking, that would just be along the top/back of the engine about where the injectors come in. Ill try to check it tonight, but after work I gotta go out to a funeral. So I may not get the opportunity to report back this evening.
That is the vacuum booster pump.... Supplies vacuum to your brake booster on your brake master cylinder....
That is the vacuum unit. It is driven by the exhaust cam & if it seizes you will lose your engine. I would not drive your car until you get it to the shop & get it fixed. I am not kidding. Have your car towed to the dealer or to Best Motor Werks.
Engine is about $7,000. Don't know how much the vaccuum pump costs. My MINI is an R53 & doesn't have one. Call John over at Best & ask him. He should be able to give you a ballpark estimate.
