Hello again all you MINIons, lol. My wife's 08 R56 is having a sputtering issue. I've replaced the plugs and ignition coils, and we are still having the issue, especially at idle.

The only other thing I can think is that it needs to be walnut blasted to remove the carbon buildup. I wouldn't mind doing it myself, as long as I had some guidance. I've been looking around and seeing that some people have made their own blaster.

Has anyone here done this on their own before?

I'd really hate to pay several hundred (or more) to have this done, when I can buy the tools and do it myself, and also have the equipment to do it again on another MINI, as I'll be getting one a little later on.

Any help and guidance you guys can give on this would be greatly appreciated.

Are there any codes stored or lights illuminated?

Usually carbon build up is accompanied by hard/no start, low power, poor MPG, even misfires.

Have you done a smoke test to check for a vacuum leak? If the issue is only at idle I would lean towards a vacuum leak, most likely the PCV hose on the back of the valve cover is leaking.

Kentucky is just a stones throw away from us in Detroit. :cornut::D

    Best of luck,

Thanks for the input guys. I took it to Mike John's Imports in Jeffersonville, Indiana, and it ended being the timing chain. They replaced the chain, the solenoid, and did an oil change. She's running pretty good again. It still needs the carbon cleaning, but that'll be a next month issue to deal with. :D

Hey there im having a similar issue with sputtering as you were having a few months ago, happened right after noticing a huge leak coming out the tensioner which decided to almost pop completely out. Tightened it up off course hoping it would give a chance to get the whole chain cassette replaced without any further damage.

Only 55K on the clock and i know is a very common issue on these. Question is, did you have all 4 cylinders misfire on you? Also do i even bother going to my local stealer to see if I get some kind of coverage on this or just get the parts and have someone else do it? 4 months with the car and already looking forward to fixing it and selling it:mad5:

There were a few that seemed to leave with the chain tensioner not being properly tightened at the factory... Sorry you are thinking of dumping your MINI...

Yes, I suppose i got lucky. Not only was the design a total fail but we also have to hope the Damn Robot tightened that damn tensioner bolt.
