Oh no not the oil question. :D I use Mobil 1. That being said they are all purity close. Unless you go with Amzoil or Royel Purple

I thought all of the newer cars used 0-40?

I does not really matter. Fresh oil is fresh oil and either one you listed will work just fine.

I applaud you for changing your oil at 5 k intervals.
Fresh oil makes everything run better and frequent oil changes extends the life of your motor.

I was super conservative with my very first oil change.... I'm from the school of thought where a new engine might not be completely perfectly clean inside. That and a combination of all those new metal surfaces just getting to know each other... I did my very first at 500 miles, the second at 1000 miles and then every 5000 miles to this very day... I felt a couple of extra oil changes on breaking in a new engine was the way to go since in the scheme of things, oil is pretty cheap.

So far I've stayed with the recommended Castrol 100% synthetic oil, but search out for the "European" version which has a higher rating than the Castrol non-european...

Local O'Rliey's doesn't stock the European Castorl, but will order from their warehouse with next business day delivery.

Yeah for "brand new motor" I would do what the Metalman said.
    500 then 1,000 for break in I may even add a 2500 then a 5 k oil change.

After you get past a few K you can move to the 3-5 K schedule as oil is very cheap insurance against motor failures.

I do 5k intervals on all three of my vehicles, 2 of them being MINIs.

    Cheap insurance.

Blackstone Labs analysis showed I was wasting $$ using a 5k interval.
7.5k miles still has plenty of life left too, but that's where I start to get anxious so I change then.

Use the cost of an oil change and get an oil analysis.....best engine diagnostic available.

I just stick my finger in the old oil and giver her a tast. If it's sweet with an earthy tast then I have changed it too soon. If it's really bitter then I know my rings are going bad. If it's gritty with a metallic tast then the main or rod barings are going bad. If it tast like coco powder then it's just the right time to change it.

I used oil from the MINI dealer while my car was in warranty, I figured that way they can't bounce a warranty claim on me for using the "wrong" oil, not to mention it's what the factory says to use in the car.

I also did an early oil change, and another before the 1 year/15K time frame, but now I change once a year or every 10K and my engine is as clean inside as the day they made it.

Remember, you don't need long life oil if you're going to change it every 5K, you just need a good synthetic of the right weight...like Mobil 1.

(Usually on sale at Wally World for $22/5 quarts)

I always use the factory filter too, not one from Autozone.

^^^^^^ I always use OEM, Mann, or Mahle oil filters. Not a thing to go cheap on.

At the risk of starting a new cold war, I believe the correct oil change interval is 300,000 divided by your age, ie:
    20 years old - 15,000 miles
    40 years old - 7,500 miles
    60 years old - 5,000 miles
    75 years old - 4,000 miles

Listening to most folks, that about fits. :D

Yeah but did Blackstone Labs test a performance car running Methanol? Nope

Did the test a crappy BMW DI engine that eats oil? Nope

Will Blackstone labs pay my repair bill if they are wrong? Nope

Screw Blackstone Labs and Consumer reports, it's my car and money and I will change the oil when I want to so I can protect my investment.

Wow! I don't read my post as disparaging your methods. Wondering what caused you to respond as you did.
