I have posted a fairly comprehensive user guide on what I consider to be one of the best diagnostic tools for Mini and BMW here https://youtu.be/-KjUiUOTxS8 for anyone who is interested.
Although I have a lot of software and interfaces for diagnostics with these cars, I find the Carly for BMW app to be reasonably priced (considering its capabilities, portability and convenience).
I also wanted to show anyone who is reluctant to attempt diagnostics on these cars how easy it is to avoid rampant dealer charges for this service.

I just got the OBD II wifi connector from Detroit Tuned. It's not the Carly recommended unit but I'll let you know how it works once it comes in.

Thanks for the shout out, don't forget you'll need to download an app from the iTunes store such as Dash Command for the tool to "speak" with your phone.

Shouldn't the Carly app already work with it?

I am an Android user, so I don't know the full market of OBD apps for Apple users, but Dash Command was the most prominently used app.

I have a ikkegol wifi adapter. Wonder if it works. Having an f56 means I have time until coding is available.

Ok, I've got the wifi odbII connector. It works great with the Carly app. I programmed a couple things. I set the car so I can roll the windows down and up with the unlock and lock buttons on the key fob. The Dash Command app doesn't work yet, from the little amount of tinkering I've done. I may have to try and get a refund for that one.
I also tried setting the car to auto unlock when the engine gets turned off, but that was unsuccessful and I also tried to set a "shift light" notification but that in combination with the auto unlock messed something up, after I set those codes I had a symbol on the little screen on the tach I'm not familiar with and it wiped out the date and time from the system. Thankfully I had an appointment at the dealer the next day and he fixed it right away.
SO, The 1st ecu I could code was successful(windows up and down via fob). The 2nd(auto unlock/shift indicator)... Not so much.
I was able to run diagnostics without any issues.

I have this. I originally bought it for my BMW and will try to play with it to to see what it can do. One thing that I found playing with my Bimmer is that a generic wifi obd2 adapter will not do all the functions. You will have to get the Carly adapter to open all the functions, such as changing settings. The generic adapter will allow you to see codes and clear them. After that, everything is hit or miss.

I would definitely recommend the Carly adapters with the Carly app, I have an old generic ELM v1.5 Wifi, plus one of the original BMWhat adapters, which both have some functionality with Carly, but their Gen 2 adapters are definitely the go. As far as Dash Command and many of the other generic apps go, they are not BMW/Mini specific, whereas Carly definitely is, so it gives genuine BMW fault codes and has some nice additional features like a "used car check". The used car check can verify the VIN, mileage and even identify if there are any issues with replacement modules in the car (such as non-matching VIN). It also allows you to see the average speed at which the car has been driven since new - which is handy for predicting future issues like DPF problems on a low average speed diesel car, indicating possible excess city usage.
