2nd Gen R56 Cooper S Help with Turbo question

    A friend of mine sold her 2010 cooper S and bought a countryman, a 2012 I believe. The new owner told her it is using oil and asked if she had had that problem, she did not. My friend told her to have the dealer look at it. She was wanting to know if the turbos are different between the 2010 and 12. Not being a turbo guy does anyone els know the answer?

    Also on the 2010 models is there a know issue with oil leaks?

    Thanks, I have heard we are a bunch of douchebag and we can't be trusted but I thought I would ask anyway.:devil:

    If they were both Cooper S's, I'd say there's not much difference (as far as I know) but since the new one is a Countryman, I don't have a clue.

    So yeah, I'm not helpful at all. Here's a bump!

    Was there something about the oil line to the turbo leaking on this model?

    The OEM line has a flex joint at the banjo fitting... It's subject to some tremendous heat blasting out from under the turbo heat shield. MINI came out with a small secondary clip on heat shield that fits over the banjo fitting to better protect this "O" ring gasket... Over time they start failing because of the heat... Then they start leaking oil around the fitting.

    The "S" turbo's are the same... The factory JCW's have a hybrid turbo

    Oh sure, don't answer the question, just send them to the library.....

    BTW, anyone ever hear of a Zinoro M12? Cause that and the Rolls Royce parts are now on real oem, along with BMW and MINI stuff......

    Edit: Never mind, Google tells me it's an all electric BMW SUV built in China

    Same turbo on all the MINIs up to the new 3 and 4 cyls, those are different. JCW is the same housing but slightly different innards.....

    Turbo oil lines are a common place for a leak for the reasons Metalman stated. I replaced the lines on my '07 with the kit from Detroit Tuned. Always heard good things about the kit. Good time to replace the "O" ring on the oil heat exchanger/filter assembly. That's another common place for an oil leak on the Prince engine. Everything needed for both of these jobs is included in the Detroit Tuned Turbo Oil Line SUPER Kit.

    Yes, the turbos are different between the N14 & N18.

    Turbo engine inherently use oil by design of the turbo, but in proper form shouldn't consume noticeable quantities. We have been seeing a lot of these cars needing valve guide seals as well, which will contribute to oil consumption.

    You also have to keep in mind that the engines in these cars use more oil per xxxx miles, and MINI classifies using 1 quart of oil every 750 "okay."

    But if you are having an oil leak from either the filter housing seal, or oil feed line our Super kit is a great package to kill 2 birds with one stone as well as hardware that usually is too deteriorated to reuse.

    Thanks may be look at the car for them in a few weeks. I was looking at that kit. It may be just what they need.

    I occasionally have to add oil to my clubby. 1/4 quart every now and then. So far no extra oil needed for the coupe.

    It's a good kit, but a real PIA to install everything. At least in my case it was. For someone with smaller hands and no arthritis it will probably be much easier. YMMV

    I did, and thank you for the product review. :beer

    Having the ability to have the car on a two post hoist will make the job worlds easier, but having larger hands will definitely limit your ability to access the tight spaces.
