2nd Gen R56 Cooper S Which Spark Plugs do you use?

    I changed mine @ 51K to see if it would help a problem. The dealer wanted almost twice what I paid on line. The ones I put in are iridium but the problem persists so I asked the dealer for the part #. They use the platinum plug by NGK, not the iridium. Neither plug has cured the "hiccup" @ approx. 2700rpm under load (uphill) in 5th & 6th gear. Any advice/ideas will be appreciated.

    Maybe 2700 under load uphill in 5th or 6th gear is lugging it a bit? maybe you just need a lower gear for those conditions?

    I think you have hit the width and breadth of plug offerings for the R56 too. I don't think anyone other than NGK makes plugs for our cars

    You will find a company called Brisk make a spark plug for the N14 engine, the Brisk identification part no is: Brisk MR12YS, these are a silver cored spark plug, and can be purchased direct from Brisk USA or 1 of the Mini performance outlets, such as Alta.

    Great timing. I'm due for some spark plugs and was trying to figure out what to get. Had been looking around for info on the Brisk plugs, but had not been able to find it until now.

    I thought about installing a set of Brisk Turbo Plugs

    I had the OEM plugs and wires and changed to the NGK Iridiums. Ran them without any problems for about 25k when they failed as I was driving [SES light blaring, along with all other lights, engine sputtering, etc.] and I had to be flatbedded to the dealer for service, 80 miles away. They found that the plug in the #3 cylinder was done, and the others were about to go, and the wires were toast. They checked it all out and replaced all with OEM stock again. So far, my MCS runs good, but I won't be changing them out again anytime soon. I asked Way about the failed plugs and all, and he said I'm good to go with the OEM again.

    Brisk do NOT offer a turbo spark plug, that will fit the N14 engine!

    The only 1 Brisk offer with the correct dimensional size for the N14 engine is the Brisk Silver MR12YS.

    Dimensions are: M12 X 1.25 with a 26.5mm reach.

    So all that said, what is the right plugs to use on the MCS?NGK or Brisk,

    Depends what you want, if your just looking to change your plugs at the recommended service intervals, then your best using the NGK's, if your into performance and you do your own servicing and you don't mind changing your plugs every 5-10,000 miles then the Brisk plug is what you want.

    Just a quick side note, if you do choose the Brisk spark plug, although out of the box they come with a factory pre set gap of 0.9mm this is way to BIG and MUST be reduced to approx 0.45mm this will all depend on the tune of your engine and the amount of boost your are running, you may need to install and remove several times to find the perfect gap for your particular engines tune!

    The problem you're having sounds a lot like the "Yo-Yo" created by a weak spring in the bypass valve (usually in 1 Gen MCS). I'm not sure if this applies to your 2nd gen, but it might be worth checking out. Here's a link to one of the more involved write-ups I've seen.

    Second Gen cars did not have the yo-yo issue found in the link above.

    I used to uses Brisk plugs in my car but have switched back to BKR8EIX from NGK.

    Nor do they use the Beru plugs cited above, those are for Gen 1 cars.

    I hope Beru makes a better plug than they used to, when our BMW's used to come in on the truck, half the time we had to change the plugs to get them to start - the bad ones we took out were always Beru.....

    That was early 70's tho......:Thumbsup:

    I used the recommended factory replacement NGKs.

    I recommend downshifting and stop trying to climb hills in 5th or 6th gear in a turbo car at only 2600 - 2700 rpms.

    Your problem is behind the wheel not the car. Sorry if the truth hurts but no one can engineer a car to overcome poor driving decisions.
