Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum. From Toronto Ontario.

I have a 2010 mini, non turbo. For a few months now the check engine light would periodically come on and turn off the next day. A few stumbles would happen just before the light came on. I took it to a mini service station and they ended up changing the VANOS. Then within a three days of that fix the stumbling starts again but this time it's complete lost of power and feels like it's in the wrong gear kind of stumble. The check engine light flashes and doesn't stay on. No if I drive it in sport mode or in M mode it drives fine. Seems to only happen at half throddle from 900rpm to 2800rpm. To me it seems like a misfire. Everyone's experience with this thing would help. Especially if I can complete the work myself.

It sounds like an ECU problem. Or a sensor pick up to the ECU.
I had a car act just like that but that was in the carbureted days and it was the acceleration pump. Today that's all controlled by the ECU

You might want to check the throttle body...

It sits low on the intake manifold if I recall correctly...

Very possibly it could have oil buildup from the EGR system, possible messing with the air flow through that unit...

You might be surprised how much oil would be sitting inside that part... Worth pulling it and doing a thorough cleaning...

    Update:
We'll the engine light is off and the it stopped stumbling. Running like a dream. I wonder if the fact that my wife drives it in the city everyday (stop and go, light to light) has anything to do with it. This week I've been driving at a steady higher speed on the highway to work and back, maybe this clean out whatever **** been causing it.

Well took it to the mechanic and the valve cover gasket is leaking into the spark plug vally. Filled it up causing the coils on cylinder 1 and 2 to miss fire. They cleaned it out and still missing.
So gaskets seals 4 plugs and 2 coil=$765 canadian. **** me. Two weeks ago they changed the camshaft solenoid=$600. What's next????
Does this make sense to everyone? Or am I getting duped?

Oh well what's done is done. I should have taken pictures and will call the mechanic in the morning to send me some. When I arrived he had the spark plugs and coils for me to look at. I tell you the plugs were eroded pretty bad. Even the coils, oil had seeped up around the plug into the coil itself, and the rubber was pretty rotten too.
We will see how it drives over the next few days.

Sorry for the late update everyone.
Car stumbling problems are gone. No more check engine lights. But now there is a large ticking noise. Mechanic says it's normal but I doubt it. My research says it's either a timing chain tensioner or vacuum pump thing. Any input? I'll start another thread.
