I have a Euro Parcel shelf and we added a 12v cig lighter type power outlet. I've been using that to keep my Nav unit charged. Now that I have an upcoming long drive I'm looking to add an iPhone charger as well.

Any recommendations as to a 2 head unit I can plug both the Nav and iPhone charger into?

Any recommendations as to a good quality iPhone 3GS charger too?

I've had this for my IPod for about 6 mo's now, works well. I'm *assuming* you are looking for music playback on your iPhone. If not Griffn has some strictly charging stuff for like $14.00. One has a dual USB outlet off one 12V outlet

Not looking for music playback from the iPhone. The car already has the OEM iPod adapter and an 80GB iPod that lives in the glove box. This current need is only to charge the iPhone.

I think there is a lack of understanding of my needs here.

    1. A unit that has the ability to plug two chargers into it. Something like this.

1 socket for the GPS and the other for the iPhone charger.

    2. Low profile iPhone charger.

It took me forever to find the unit in #1 above. now that I found that I guess this is a moot thread now.

They have those (or a cable that does the same thing) at every local auto parts store and and Radio Shack and WallyWorld.

I prefer the two-headed cable - much less obtrusive, can be stuffed into a smaller space.

You can also get nifty "power strips" that you can mount in the parcel shelf with multiple outlets

maybe I am missing something. Single 12V to Dual 12V seems much bulkier than a single 12V to a dual USB.

    Oh well

The Garmin is not USB where the iPhone is. Take the iPod out of the equation, it lives in the glovebox and is charged by the OEM iPod adapter.

The iPhone lives in a Craven Speed mount to the left of the steering wheel, the Garmin is on a Craven Speed mount to the right of the steering wheel. Power source for both will be a 12v Cig lighter type thingie that is mounted in the Euro Parcel shelf.

I'd be surprised if you could not charge your Garmin with a USB. Most i've seen have that small mini usb connection at the back of the unit and then there are options on how to feed (12V DC, USB, AC converter)

    Either way will work

Good point, Tim. Depends on the model of Garmin - some are mini USB right into the mount - others have a separate mini USB port that can be used for charging. You don't *have* to use the OEM garmin cord. I use a cheapo plug-in phone charger with mini USB on mine sometimes.

You are correct. I had forgotten that one can use USB on the Garmin. Thanks for the reminder.

At this stage of the game thats not gonna happen, everything is nicely tucked away behind the dash and there is time for that this week.

What not going to pull the dash apart to change out the 12V for the USB? :cornut:

(I did not catch that you had your Garmin basically hardwired)

Mostly because it has been apart so many time that the next time will need to a be a serious operation to put in all new clips. Some are just barely there now. Something to do at the dealership with a parts counter handy, or the next MetroplexMINI DIY day.

My Tom Tom works that way...I routinely charge it off my computer at work with just a standard usb cable. no reason the Garmin will not. Assuming they are following USB standards for power.

    Nathan,

I did the same thing for my car, the dual cig plug route from Radio Shack. They had one that had a long enough pigtail to get to the area under the steering wheel.
