I had seen in some postings at another forum something that lead me to believe the R56 JCW turbo is not the same as the regular MCS turbo.

Is this correct? Where can I look for parts numbers to find out for sure?

Is this turbo only available as part of the factory JCW option, or is it somehow obtainable otherwise? I don't see it mentioned in the dealer-installed JCW upgrade.

When you go with the dealer installed JCW kit, you don't get everything that comes with the factory installed JCW. Turbo doesn't get changed and well as all of the differences in the head or the manual transmission.

The dealer installed JCW "kit" is basically a CAI and exhaust, with re-map of the ECU to accept the new parts.

And the kit has to be bought in total, I asked just about the ECU upgrade and had to take the exhaust and Stage 1 Airbox.

They make the disc that the ECU upgrade comes on VIN specific by the by

Think I came out ahead with the route I choose

I just got a tune from Jan of RMW. He said the outside dimensions are the same but the internals are quite different. The results of his tuning a JCW are significantly greater than tuning an MCS primarily because of the difference in the turbo. Took mine from 192 ftlbs of torque at about 2600 rpm to 260 ftlbs. It is now a little monster.

I stuck with the JCW Kit, not that it's the best performance, and certainly isn't the cheapest, but for me warranty was very important, especially since I've had the dread 'cold-start' issue.

I just bought the Flash Tool from RMW so I can change tunes at will. I'll have the current monster tune for the track, a version of this tune with no direct alteration of standard boost levels so I can use it in the STX Class for autocross and an OEM tune.

I have the cold start issue as well but the dealer is going to fix that under warranty as well as the likely fuel pump failure that will soon be upon me. They seem to have fully recognized the timing chain problem.

Quit bragging about your monster 260ftlbs of tq when I only have a measly 180..........I'll see you on the track! :p

I have what would be the "aftermarket" equivalent of the JCW kit ... CAI, Magnaflow cat-back w/ resonator delete, and hot side boost tube. I had the cold-start rattle also and had it fixed under warranty w/ no problem. For them to deny you warranty work based on a mod, they have to prove that the mod caused the failure. Even though it was never brought up, IMHO, there's no way that they could prove any of those parts, or pretty much the majority of R56 engine mod parts (boost tubes, tune, cai, downpipe, intercooler, etc.), could cause a leaking/faulty timing chain tensioner.

    OK....... here's something
Been reading the fine performance book Nathan sent me for finding the "Gold Key":D
I always knew the MCS and the factory JCW turbo were different. The book makes mention of up grading the turbo to using the European JCW Challenge turbo. What's up with that? Anyone know the details?

Even if the only course is dominate hardware, as opposed to superior skills, it is time that "mini_racer" and "Gene Driving Machine" domination of H2R for mini's comes to an end. Thy reign shall fade into the sunset. Fear the GreyLenz! Each day it grows stronger. Each run off the track makes it tougher. Each lap it gets faster. Fear it!!
