My MINI suffers from the lovely melted hood scoop issue and I've been thinking about other options. I keep going back and forth between leaving it as-is (for awhile at least), purchasing a replacement and having it painted (either the body color or black), or going with a black hood scoop.

I've photoshopped a few pictures to get an idea of what the black ones would look like. My photoshop skills definitely aren't the best, so take them with a grain of salt. :cornut:

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Currently:

    Option 1: Notch Style

Option 2: M7 Vortex 2 (most expensive :eek6: and seems to stick up pretty high)

Option 3: what I think a plain black scoop would look like...

I normally wouldn't go with a black scoop, but with the other black trim items on your car, I think it looks pretty good.

I do NOT like the Vortex 2 one bit. Too "in your face" for a MINI.

Option 3 definitely looks to be the cleanest install.

Ya if you put that vortex on there you would need fake 3 piece rims, giant spoiler, and muffler delete to go with it. (Fart)

I just left my OEM melted scoop right on there. It looks like something gnarly was going down at some point. I kind of like its "character".... :cornut:

I forgot to add LED tire valve caps, neon glow, and at least ten boost gauges on the A pillar.

I read about melting hood scoops when I got my car. I bought a Way Motor Works turbo wrap and installed it.

    http://www.waymotorworks.com/wmw-turbo-heat-shield.html

I work on large industrial engines, every one of them has lagging (insulation) around the turbocharger's hot side. It improves turbocharger efficiency. It also keeps the hood scoop from melting.

I have black accents on my car and I tried the black hood scoop and after a couple days I was happy it was just plasti-dip. I was on the fence before trying it out and ended up going back to stock. That M7 snorkel is gross. Stay clean, keep it body color.

What year MINI do you have? Mine is an 09 and I had the same melty scoop, replaced by the dealer under warranty...
MINI had just come out with a fix that I mentioned and even the dealer wasn't aware of. They ordered a new scoop and painted it and installed it with the new heat shield... I haven't had an issue since... I think none of the aftermarket look any good, but that's only my opinion... Go with what you want...

Here's the OEM aluminum heat shield P/N 51-48-2-183-986

Thanks for the info. I'll ask my dealer about it. It's a 2008. I'm sure it's way past warranty coverage, but I'll them the cost of replacement.

If it is part of a recall, it is covered for a long time. It never hurts to ask.
