I wonder if there's enough people who have blacked out their chrome parts to keep this thread alive. I haven't done any plasti-dipping, but I think it can look good sometimes so let me know and post photos. The reason I thought about this is because I'm going to do it on my awful, white tollway pass and hope it blends in better with my color scheme.
Wow. Seems like a lof effort since I used pinstripe tape. I plastic dipped the chrome hinges and boot handle. Tomorrow is the headlight rings and maybe chrome interior if I get ambitious.
Mirror caps red, headight rings, grille, wheels, gas cap, side scuttles and boot hatch handle black. The paint has held up very well over the last three years with very little touchup.
I did my grille and where the license plate was. The previous owner bumped into something and the black makes it a little less obvious. I also dipped my hood and boot badges because the black fell off. One of these days I'll order replacment badges.
I have sprayed my beltline, headlight rings, and the black trim around the aero front bumper. Love how easy it is to redo/repair.
What is the exact type of spray are we talking about? Are you using this over the chrome? Thanks Glenn
http://m.lowes.com/pd_42849-61158-11203-6_0__?productId=3543514 This is what I use. Just be sure your surface is clean. When used properly it is very forgiving. There are people spraying entire cars with plasti dip. However to do this it is probably best to not use the aerosol cans. More information can be found here: https://www.dipyourcar.com/PlastiDip/
I was thinking about doing the belt line too, maybe I'll just do a tape for that. What kind of tape is this?
Don't waste your time with the tape. It will not last very long before starting to peel, I know. Went from tape to Plastidip and it is much better.
I disagree. I did the beltline on my R53 in 2008 and it looked just as good last year when i sold it. Just used the same tape on my R52 last weekend and j expect the same longevity. I used 3M Scotch cal Striping Tape. 1/2 inch
I have Plasti-dipped (sprayed) the below parts on my 05 R53. Gas cap Outside door handles (I used the Outmotoring Union Jack door handle covers) I prepped them, sprayed, then installed them. I also did my side scuttles. I plan of doing my belt-line trim before the Dragon because the 3M tape job is pulling back on the ends. Oh and I did not stretch the tape at all the glue just comes loose over time. The key to spraying anything with Plasti-dip is make sure the can is warm. The warmer the can is the better it will flow and not be blotchy. I warm the cans in the sun for a few hours before I use them. Also apply many thin light coats and it will turn out perfect. I have also done parts on other cars including my buddies Audi SQ5, roof rails, all the chrome on the front.
I did the silver trim rings around my Speedo, tach, and center vents on the dash. Works great for interior trim bits.
The black 3M tape works better for the first Gen. cars for some reason. Maybe because it is narrower than the 2nd Gen. cars. I've applied tape to at least a dozen cars and the Plastidip works, looks and lasts much better than the tape.
No dip on my car. The chrome removal is all paint and the accents are done with vinyl and/or 3M tape.
I have a black suction cup EZ pass holder and you know you don't have to put it on the windshield.....I have mine on the front edge of the sunroof. If I open the sunroof all they way to does not hit the back.
I dipped my tow hook red. It lives in the tool roll not on my car. I also have some pairs of pliers dipped.
I dipped every bit of chrome on my car within a week of getting it. Love plasti dip. Soo easy to use, If you screwed it up then the dip was too cold nuff said.
