So, whatcha been watching? I saw the new James Bond movie, Spectre yesterday, and I generally liked it. This is, what?, the 4th time Daniel Craig has been Bond, and they are slowly moving to the recognizable Bond formula. Bond movies became sort of campy comic strips in the 70s through the 90s, much to dismay of those of us who like the simpler, early Bond films. With the start of the Bond reboot with Casino Royale nine years ago, the new generation of Bond movies became more believable, and more relatable to those of use who like some semblance of realism in movies. This movie is definitely connected to the three previous Bond movies with Craig, taking right up after the events of Skyfall. They have started introducing a few of the classic elements (remember, there wasn't even a Q character until the last movie). This time we see a few of Q's gadgets (one of which goes just a bit too far toward fantasy, IMO) but I guess that was inevitable, given the franchise. Great stunts, good entertainment, good story. I'd give it a solid "B" grade. Anyone else see it?
Sean Connery was the best as 007, IMHO Wasn't too thrilled with Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan or Timothy Dalton.... Meh...
On my list to see... Bridge of Spies... https://youtu.be/mBBuzHrZBro The Martian... https://youtu.be/ej3ioOneTy8
I really enjoyed The Martian! I thought they did a really good job staying relatively true to the book, and thought it was a nice change of pace from the typical good guy vs. bad guy movie.
I finally watched Mad Max: Fury Road. In retrospect, I wonder why I sat through the entire thing. Can a movie be a movie if there is no plot? Because this train wreck didn't have one. Okay, it's not fair to say it was a train wreck, because that would involve a train. Instead, this was a more of a wild dystopian future desert vehicle wreck. Over and over and over and over and over. I will say there are two positives: 1) The various vehicles were very imaginatively designed. 2) The stunt work was impressive. But watching two flippin' hours of a multi-vehicle chase through the desert with many, many, many crashes does not a movie make.
Took my wife and daughter to see The Revenant last night... I felt like I should have liked it more than I did.... Popcorn was good... Free refills...opcorn:
Is this only about new movies? I have a bad one... I finally watched Plan 9 from Outer Space recently. Wanted to see what they mean when they call it the worst movie ever made. They're exaggerating, right? It'll be one of those things that's so bad it's laughable, right? Wrong! On both counts! It's bad, really bad. Damn my curiosity! I don't recommend it.
Steve.... In case you want to watch it again... [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln7WF78PolA"]Plan 9 from Outer Space Ed Wood (full movie) - YouTube[/ame]
I don't care what the naysayer critics have to say, everyone should at least think about seeing 13 Hours. After all, there's a vote just around the corner... "Never Forget!"
I saw The Big Short this weekend and thought it was really good. Great cast that made things easy for everyone to understand. Numerous financial friends of mine also highly recommend it.
You get to watch a movie that falls somewhere between "the worst movie ever made" and "so bad, it's good." Do you have about an hour and 20 to waste finding out where you fall on that scale? The only part I thought was "so bad, it's good" was the bit with the laughably fake flying saucer wobbling around on a string. If I remember correctly, that redeems about 15 seconds of the movie. Go ahead, give it a try. You might like it.
Just saw "Killing Season" on Starz. DeNiro and Travolta in a movie that reminded me of the movie "Hell in the Pacific" that only had two actors, Lee Marvin and Mifune Toshiro. Only not as good. Not nearly. :frown2:
Recently saw Star Wars in IMAX. Also saw The Hateful Eight. Tarantino crushed it again. There is barely a handful of directors/writers out there that put as much effort into the characters like he does. The dialog among them makes the three hours go by in no time.
Star Wars was the last movie I saw and I liked it. 2 series I recommend Man in the High Castle on Amazon Prime and Jessica Jones on Netflix
