This could be good... Top Gear presenters: Virtually unknown Chris Harris and Sabine Schmitz 'to be Chris Evans' sidekicks' - Telegraph
Sabine is awesome, met her at Road America, class act. She did the German knock off of Top Gear that didn't fair so well. Chris Harris is damned good, but this is the wrong format for him IMHO. Evans is, well Evans. What made Top Gear so good was the dynamic of the three, which is a difficult if not impossible thing to recreate. I don't see it happening with these three.
I personally don't want it to be the same format as it was with James, Richard, and Jezza. I was beginning to get bored with the same antics week after week. I'm most excited by Harris being on the show. I had gotten to the point of enjoying his videos on Drive more than TG. TG will not survive if it attempts to out buffoon the three masters of buffoonery, so it needs to re-invent itself.
It has just been announced that Formula1 in the UK will be moving from the BBC to another terrestrial channel, so that may be Coulthard's day job gone.
I don't think a chick on the show will compel me to watch... Moreover, if they're losing folks behind the cameras already that's enough said.
It's not the chick aspect at all...She's a damned good driver, and drove many of our cars at Road America when she came at the invite of the BMWCCA. She's attractive, but by no means eye candy. Of three, she's the most knowledgable behind the wheel. She's also one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Those are the reasons I'd watch her. Again, I think the show will flop. But I'd like to see how she does, simply having met her.
Doesn't matter how good you are behind the wheel or how funny you are, you don't make a good addition to a cast on a show like that unless you're intelligent. To be honest, I don't know anything about Evans but the others (Coulthard included, if he really is involved) seem to be very smart. They also seem to all have loads of personality; also important, but three (or four) big personalities like that, and the egos that usually accompany big personalities, can be much more con than pro if they don't jell. Time will tell.
Yes, intelligence is a important, but probably not as critical as the other two characteristics, provided at least one of the new hosts is intellectually inclined. But it does matter IMHO that you're either good behind the wheel, or know something about cars and their mechanics to have any meaningful input. And a sense of humor matters as well. I think all three characteristics matter, but without knowledge about automobiles, you really don't have much of a show.
Oops, I meant "unless you're also intelligent." Left out an important word. They got a bunch of good people, IMO, just need to see whether those big personalities jell or clash. There's a lot more to it than that, obviously, but this is about the employees who stand in front of the cameras.
