My MK2 VW GTI 20V 1.8T Projekt

Translation is The 20 Valve Scirocco Project. I have had this 16V Scirocco for a couple of years and it was a project in itself to get it driveable:

I have done a lot of work restoring it:

but the real story is just begining Click the image to open in full size.

I got a great deal on an 2003 20th Anniversary Edition GTI except that it wasn't in the best of shape:

What was good is the engine, ecu, wiring harnesses, and keys. Everything I need to do a complete swap into the Scirocco. I plan on putting the dash, cluster, even the stereo and AC into the interior of the Scirocco, and then drop the 1.8T 20V engine in the bay. It already has an APR flash on it so it will be close to 200 whp. Believe it or not, 1.8T into MK1 chassis are not that rare so there is a lot of info and even conversion mounts for the engine. The transmission I have won't work, but is a rare 6 speed one so it will actually pay for the purchase of the whole car. Right now I am stripping the donor to help finance things and working on getting the Rocco ready. I will probably be going for the actual motor swap in Nov so stayed tune. Not only will I be dropping a great engine in with a modern interior, but I will be restoring the paint as well to make this a car worthy to win any show. Until then here they are meeting for the first time:

Very cool project. I wanted one version of Scirocco or another for years but always had reason to buy something else. Great engine.....would love to work on a project like that.....very jealous. Keep us updated!

Thanks, unfortunately there won't be much progress for awhile since I am working on getting the donor stripped and parted out to pay for this. Nov is the target date to pull the engine. I just want to make sure that I have everything ready before then.

Cool restoration !

Is that an '86? I had an '84 for a bit, but sold it to get a family car and didn't want to part with my '78.

Have fun!

in for the fun stuff. more and more, I'd like a project like this for the third car...since the other two are less than 5 years old.

It is an 87. I love having it sitting out there. If i have free time, I can just say, "I'm going to go work on the car."

Worked on the donor today:

I got all of the wires unplugged and pulled out. I labled most everything as well to make things easier later on.

Here's a pic of the Rocco's engine bay. It is almost a shame to take it out since it is running so well now:

Need to find a good new home for it then, eh?

Yes that is the plan. Hopefully I'll get a buyer lined up for it when it comes out in Nov If I get everything sold, I'll be into this for no cost or even a profit
