Hello gang... New to the site and need some help. My wife has a 2009 Cooper S (only 57,000 km) that has developed an issue very suddenly. Wife was driving home and all of the sudden all of the warning lights on the dash started to cycle through, check engine, ABS, tire pressure etc...and they just keep going over and over. The speed-o and tach both stopped registering speed and RPM's and the whippers start and stop. I took it to my usual guy who disconnected the battery and checked the altenator... both good. He said he could not fix it as it was likely a computer modual and even if he replaced it,, he could not download the data. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this and if so...what was the issue and most important... how much $$ to fix. Thanks in advance
Welcome to M/A the FUN Mini site. I hate electrical problems but one thing about MINI's is if the batter is on it's way out all kinds of this act weird. Have you tried swapping a battery for a know good one yet. Just don't puts a tester on it swap it out with a fresh on. Good luck on your problem.
If it's the original battery, 5 years old, it more than likely is the culprit. Like Dave says, don't just check it replace it.
Thanks guys... Just doing research on changing the battery out and find that I may still need to go to the dealer to have thee system re-programed afterwards.... anyone have any idea if that is correct??
I didn't need programming when I replaced the battery in our 08 clubman. I'd hazard a guess that you don't need to either.
Is it reasonable to expect that if the battery is the cause of the problem...replacing it will correct the issue without having to have anything 're-set'??
Well.... replaced battery this morning ($150)... issue persists! Any suggestions for the next possible solution??
No idea how to go about checking that on my own.. something could have gone to ground anywhere in the system and finding it would be like looking for a needle in a stack of needles.
Under the hood is a positive lead that is used to jump off the car. It has a plastic cover with a + sign on it. Check the bolt is tight this is a know problem area. Also a long shot but disconnect the battery for at least 10min. This will reset the ECU.
Also what ScottinBind means is ground wires. Not a ground fault. I'm a R53 guy so I don't know where all your grounds are. There should be one that goes from the engine to the frame. It will be a black large gage wire. Make sure it is clean and tight.
Situation resolved!!!.... Traded the Mini in. I explained the issues to the dealer and came up with an acceptable 'as is' trade in value. Wife will be driving a 2010 Infiniti FX35 SUV by the end of the week. This was her second Mini and I guess she has moved on. Thanks for all your suggestions and assistance.
