The US EPA may impose fines on VW of up to $37,500 per vehicle for violations, a potential total of more than $18 billion. Regulatory authorities in other countries might impose additional fines.

Consumer law suits for damages are pending. The recall itself will cost additional millions. VW customer relations and sales may also be adversely impacted.

VW's stock was down almost 20% in trading today in Germany, a paper loss to shareholders of about $17 billion.

Billions wiped off VW market value after rigging claims

I see an opportunity for BMW to enter the picture here. How fitting it could be, so many decades later.

I wonder how far up the executive chain this little bit of skulduggery was known....

Some bodies will most likely be sacrificed at the altar over this...

This must've gone up to very high levels. Scheduling is everything for putting a car into production. If engineers were struggling to meet emissions goals and causing delays, executives would have gotten involved with creating the test defeat as a Plan B.

    Volkswagen recalls own pants

by Sniff Petrol on Monday, September 21st, 2015

    Volkswagen, yesterday

Volkswagen has issued a precautionary recall for its own pants after noticing that they may be on fire.

‘This is purely a precaution,’ said VW spokesman Karl-Hans Pinocchio. ‘Yes, there might be a small about of fire around the area of our pants, but they will not emit over 40 times the permitted amounts of nitrogen oxides and cause respiratory problems in children as long as we keep them inside this emissions testing facility.’

A VW insider later admitted that the emissions relating to the company’s pants being on fire are likely to be dwarfed by those caused by suddenly burning through $18 billion.

‘Look, this isn’t that bad,’ insisted a spokesman. ‘I mean, it’s not like we mouth banged a pig or something…’

Volkswagen denies report about CEO's ouster

    September 22, 2015 14:18 CET
FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- Volkswagen denied a report that said CEO Martin Winterkorn was to be replaced by Matthias Mueller, the head of the carmaker's Porsche sports car business.

A Volkswagen spokesman described the report as "ridiculous." A spokesman for Porsche said Mueller was currently at a Volkswagen management board meeting at its headquarters in Wolfsburg.

Wonder if anyone in the EPA will look for possible cheats on gasoline engined cars now.

Hmmm, wonder how much of a depreciation hit VW's will suffer. Might be a good time to go buy a used TDI model.

Don't know why any TDI owner would sell now. They'd lose a good bit. We may see VW paying TDI owner's for diminished value.

To say the sharks smell blood here is cruel to sharks...

A proposed class-action lawsuit filed today alleges that Volkswagen and a Florida dealership deceived customers about the performance of the diesel-powered vehicles at the center of the German automaker’s emissions scandal.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of a Florida woman who bought a 2013 Volkswagen Beetle with TDI clean diesel engine and others who bought cars with the technology, names Volkswagen and AutoNation Volkswagen Delray -- an independently owned dealership now under a new name -- in Delray Beach, Fla.
