A few seconds of Rally Sweden recce. [ame]https://twitter.com/Michelin_Sport/status/829009605116178433[/ame]
Those are tough conditions. Snow & that part is great, but no large deep snow banks to bounce off of, not so great.
The light is just the northern lights. Crashing while testing, you have to find the limits. Sure nice to have a whole big team to rebuild your car.
^^^ True the little underfunded guys have been shut out. It's a sad state of affairs for sure. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lz2c7fLXecw"]Juho Hänninen tests for Rally Sweden 1.2.2017 - YouTube[/ame]
I have always understood that Sweden was the fastest of all the rallies inspite of the snow due to the studded tires. Any truth in that?
I was thinking the same. Looks like fresh snow and not a lot of it (not a lot for Sweden, that is); I hope it lasts until the rally starts. I assume no banks will mean slower stage times.
I have read that too. Seeing those cars testing on the snow with such high cornering speeds seem to bear that out. I'm not sure the stage times will be slower, just that mistakes will be pretty costly. Seeing how the Citroen was digging though the snow into the dirt I wonder how the roads will hold up for the rest of the pack. Hope they get more snow. :fingerscrossed:
I get the feeling bouncing off the snow banks isn't just something that happens when you make a mistake. Can't remember who, but I'm fairly sure I read a driver saying it's a technique to use the banks intentionally in some places. Drive faster, where it will work, using the banks as a channel rather than having to rely on your studs to get you 'round the corner. Kinda makes sense if you know there's so much snow lining the road that it's almost difficult to go off, plus it's snow so low friction and little to no speed scrubbed off rubbing against it. At least, I think that was the explanation...
Erik Carlsson told me about his rally technique driving 2 stroke SAAB's. It included bouncing off snow banks & never lifting because of low power & no torque. Babs & I had a nice long talk with him at the SAAB club convention 30 years ago or so.
