I can't understand why a modern car built to modern standards is not safe enough for your grandson's father yet a Bug is??? Nothing against Bug's, but man talk about a lack of safety.

It was all about the speed and a new driver. PLUS, I don't think he is the sharpest tack in the box :).

Heard a funny comment from an acquaintance who is 101:
He says he's as sharp as a tack and just as flat headed.

I wouldn't necessarily give a 16 year old a SC convertible as a first car or a classic VW. The VW would be a good a car to build as a side project.

Are we talking about the grandson or the father?

I'd suggest he buy his son a Gen 1 Cooper. It's not fast, but it IS nimble and is just the car for an inexperienced driver to zip around in. It's easy on gas and would allow junior to get the feel of a stick shift.

Agreed - Gen 1 is WAAYY safer than a beetle. That said, a Beetle is way easier for someone to begin learning how to work on cars as its mechanical.

My wife didn't drive when we were married. I got her driving lessons and when she got her licence, I bought her an old Ford Galaxy, because I wanted a lot of steel around her for when she had her first crash. She totaled it after two months and walked away without a scratch. She hasn't had a wreck since.

Nice Bug, Brian. I bought a new 1966 VW 1300 when I could no longer pay for the upkeep of my 1959 Morris Mini Minor. It was a great car and I have lots of fond memories of it. :ihih:

I have never understood the cult love for the VW Bug, since it is a car of the people designed by Hitler. WTF :confused5:

All the piece, love and BS cannot erase that fact.

Or that BMW built aircraft engines for his luftwaffe? Or That Toyoda (Lexus) was an admiral in the Japanese navy.

My father told me one of the things he & all the others fought for in WWII was the choice to live free & have the freedom of choice to do what they want. Do as you wish, but if you want to hate the bug hate it because a British major didn't let it die. It's an interesting read.

But I think it really all comes down to not liking a certain poster here. Of course I could be wrong, I often am.

Ferdinand Porsche designed the VW, not Hitler.
