Sad reminder of one change coming with the end of the season.

I dread what ESPN is going to do.

Details man, details. Is their coverage any good and who are the players?

I’ve been watching Sky F1 for years now, and vastly prefer them to anyone else.

David Croft and Martin Brundle do the in race commentary (Brundle’s a former driver if you recall, and used to comment for the BBC when they had the license).

Pre race show is very good as well, with Brundle, Johnny Hebert, Damon Hill, Paul DiResta, as well as a few others do the analysis and discussions on the paddock. Sometimes one of the commentators gets to drive a prior year’s car and do a review of it - a perk of having a stable of F1 drivers as presenters.

Martin does a Grid Walk right before the race that is the longest running grid walk in F1.

They do very insightful shorts and interviews before the race, and have a lot of technical information woven into everything. They also do an involved post race segment, but I often skip that bit.

They also don’t do in-race commercials (which is absolutely wonderful).

The only complaint that some might have is that they do tend to favor British interests and drivers, but then they’re British so that’s entirely their prerogative.

It's going to be broadcast in the US...you know that means there will be in-race commercials, right? Probably lots of them given it's ESPN and given it's a simulcast they'll have no other way to make their money.

It will be someone's job to decide when to cut in and, if there aren't any commentators in the know about the cuts, there will be no explanations about what happened during the breaks.

Yes, but my only hope is that since the new F1 is embracing social media - maybe fans will be able to voice their opinions in a way that will impact their decisions.....I think this is one reason Bernie stayed away from social media.

Given Bernie’s stated love of authoritarianism, I’m sure you’re right. The last thing he wanted was to hear from people who aren’t rich.

I’m hoping for an option to legally stream the Sky feed online. But then for some reason, some of the streaming providers seem to think that paying a subscription isn’t enough, and inject commercials anyway.

If that’s the case, then I shall continue to Sail the Seven Seas, hoisting my flag and giving no quarter. Arrrrrrrrrrr!

FP1 highlights worth watching just for the quick glimpse if the test rig they put on Raikkonen's car.

Hobbs clearly has strong opinions about the ESPN deal. Don't hold back, Hobbo, tell us what you really think! :biggrin5:

Long ago when ESPN had F1 you never knew for sure when or if they would show the race. I can’t count how many times a stick and ball game preempted a race. What are they thinking?

I remember those times too. Before the age of the DVR, I set the VHS & hope it didn't record Olympic curling instead of the race.

I also remember when there was no race coverage at all. A friend of mine used to subscribe to the Motoring News. All the race news was in there, but one week old by the time we got to read it. Now we get the news almost instantly, click click = news.

I sure hope ESPN doesn't screw this up.

Remember 50+ years ago when you had to wait a couple of months for Road & Track to have an article for the race?

Well that race was a real yawn. Just a procession of very expensive cars. Hopefully next year brings better racing & a decent race broadcast.:fingerscrossed:

    Congrats to Bottas.

even the highlights reel of that race is boring... No wonder Santander decided to spend $40 million/year elsewhere than on the eternal second place Ferraris. Woudn't be surprised if Ferrari does pull out. F1 seems to be tanking as bad as CART did after they went public. Bean counters don't put on great racing spectacles, it seems.
