I knew about the Moke but I'd not heard of the Scamp until today. Apparently it's a kit car conversion they started selling in the late 60s but the company is still in business and still selling kits. I guess if you can't find a Moke you can build a somewhat similar Scamp? Anyone seen one of these things in the "flesh?"
I've seen several Scamps at large Mini gatherings in the UK. I never really thought of them as particularly Moke-like, but more just kind of a very square-cut variant of the Mini. There was a company called Anderson that made a very close copy of the Moke called the Anderson Cub. Well, they made the body only and you'd just bolt up all your Mini bits onto it to complete it. Here's the Cub.
It looks like some guy just took some square tube and made some framing. Then covered it with flat panels. Why ruin a Moke?
I don't think it's likely someone would use a Moke as the donor, more likely some other classic so rusty that restoration of the body would seem more like building from scratch.
There are a few models: Scamp Motor Company - Homepage Some look more Moke-like than others and, to my eye, much more like the Moke than other models of the classic. Call it an "eye of the beholder" thing (and I'm clearly cherry-picking) but... Moke: Scamp:
I was only familiar with the earlier, boxier, versions, but that third generation definitely is Moke-like. I used to own an English-built 1966 Mini Moke and it was a total blast to drive - even with its stock 850cc engine. It was the ultimate jump in and go vehicle. I swear it handled better than a regular Mini (which is really saying something) - perhaps because of its lower center of gravity. Or, it could be because you sit on top of, rather than in, a Moke so you really need to hold on tightly!
