I have a 2007 Mini Cooper, convertible. Last winter the convertible top did not open beyond the sun roof position. I fooled around with it for several months with no success and eventually took it to a garage. The garage called me several hours later and reported that it had worked perfectly for them, without any work. It continued to work perfectly for me until last night (I haven't used it for several months because of cool weather) when it did the same thing - opens the sun roof but will not open to the complete down position. I would call the garage but was assured they did not find any problem since it was working when they first looked at. Has anyone else experienced this sort of problem?

Thanks for the help. This is my first post.

Check the parcel shelf make sure it is seated correctly....There is a switch where the shelf sits if it is moved or out of place the top will NOT open all the way...Sometimes it gets knocked out of position ....I would check this first...

Unfortunately I seem to recall seeing this type of problem posted by others, but cannot remember what the fix was. The original post was within the last 4 months, possibly in the convertible top section.

The rear shelf in the luggage compartment presses on an interlock switch that allows the top to open beyond sunroof position. The switch is on the left side. Make sure that the rear shelf is completely down and secured.

The "loading aid" levers should be completely down. I would venture a guess that your left side lever is in the up position.

If it's been several months since you had cycled the top did you forget that you have to run the sun roof back, release the switch then re-press the switch to continue running the top back? it's a two step process. Only other thing would be the little pushbutton switch under the foot on the left rear corner of the shelf as previously mentioned or one of the release levers is not latched.

It was as suggested, the button under the parcel shelf was not engaged. I fixed it thanks to your comments.:D

OK, problem solved, now pull up a stump and sit a while. The fool jug will get passed around shortly.

On a first generation car, you have only ordinary instruments. If it was second generation with visual boost, you would think it would display a message to say "is the parcel shelf down?", as it seems to catch out nearly every convertible owner at some time.

Can the parcel shelf be removed and the switches jumped out? I really cannot see a practical use for it and since it only causes problems from time to time and means I have to carry my mini spare in the back seat when it's down I though about just removing it altogether.

Actually the shelf is there to support the top when in down position. Otherwise it would collapse into the open compartment.

...and very much likely to break the glass for an incredibly expensive replacement cost
