My car (2006 Mini S convertible) has the air bag system warning light. The code reader shows a code for the explosive switch that disconnects the battery in the event of an air bag deployment. The shop I'm using says they would have to replace the whole cable (runs length of car) and that there is no guarantee that would solve the problem. They said they thought there used to be a kit to replace just the switch, but that now they can't find it. this sounds like the reason I'll sell it, but i hate to do that because otherwise, i am totally happy with it. Any thoughts?
Did your airbag deploy? If so the explosive battery disconnect should have occurred.... Your starter shouldn't crank... An easy check to verify is shown in this video.... https://youtu.be/OdNYzUrLvq4?t=5m40s Maybe give the good guy's over at eMINIparts.com a call https://www.eminiparts.com/parts/index.cfm?searchText=12427525434&make=MINI&action=oePartSearch&siteid=217261 They can tell you if a kit is available.... PS..... Not a good reason to sell it....
Air bag did not deploy. The warning light just lit up a couple of days ago. As soon as I am sure I've got all the terminology correct, I'll call those guys, thanks!
Check for terminal corrosion.... MINI's have been known to have problems in that area... Might also check for corrosion at the + battery terminal connection at the engine firewall (under the black plastic cover).... Could be the ECU isn't getting a good reading and throwing a fault...
Did the light come on shortly after the battery was replaced? Pull the black cover off the explosive battery disconnect (see video) and inspect for corrosion around the cable disconnect just to make sure there isn't corrosion in the joint that is supposed to separate......
There is a recall for airbag wiring on the Gen 1 minis. I can't remember what years were effected. I would give Mini USA a call before I do anything els, give them your vin and they can tell you if your car is affected.
I had my airbag wiring replaced this year on my '06 MCS, as well as that on my wife's '06 MCS, both under the recall.
I had mine done over a year ago...and the stealership REALLY screwed my passanger upholstery. Their response..'oh well'.
