just wondering what oil i should be buying for my mini cooper s '09? i tired searching but seems like it wont find anything on this subject....
Take a look at this thread, lots have opined. http://www.motoringalliance.com/forums/mini-stuff/25130-good-old-what-wipers-fuel-oil-air-filter-tires-do-you-use-thread.html
I wouldn't use "witch" oil, that's for sure! As for which oil, a lot depends on how you use your car and how long you want to go between changes.....if you're one of those people who change their oil every 3-5K miles, you don't need long life oil. If you do a lot of track days, you might go another way. If you're going to go till the computer tells you to change it, you need oil that's made for extended change intervals. Other than that, just be sure you use a good synthetic of the right weight and you're good to go......
Since Dave's not here I'll fill in his absence. Use Amsoil it is the best, all other oil is carp. Speaking for me only, Mobil 1 0w40 works well. I believe in 5,000 mile oil changes. Oils is cheaper than engines.
True as long as it meets the spec for your car. Not all do. No worries about which witch you use.
The issue with Witch Oil is one is often very unsure of the eye of newt content. Sure, the label says X ppm. Where was the newt eye sourced? Was it humanly? Were these Siberian Newts that offer better cold weather starting or Mexican Newts, with their better heat tolerance. I won't even get into the whole farm raised vs wild collected. That argument will never be solved. Let's just say, go wild! Now, oil made from stocks collected from dead dinosaurs. That's an easy subject. Get a good one, they pretty much all are.
5W-30, 0W-30, 5W-40, or 0W-40 full synthetic with ACEA A3/B3 cert would be good. Also with LL-01 unless you change it oftener than recommended as noted above. That actually narrows it down quite a bit. Mobil 1 0W-40 and the factory oil are good choices, and there are a few others that "make the grade" as well.
Ok I have let everyone say what they think is the best. 5w-30 end of story! why? Because I said so! Crashton 0w-40rrr::lol::lol::lol:
Ok really every one has given good advice. I believe the most important thing is to keep it changed and check it when you feed your Mini.
One more oil change bit of info..... STAY OUT of the local Iffy Lube franchise. Doesn't matter witch one they all suck.
Or............you could go to your local Mini dealer and buy 5 qts of Mini oil from them, the stuff the factory and dealers use......while you're there pick up an oil filter. I always use factory filters.
What MiniDave said.... Use the factory filter or Mann filter... And stay away from all of the other ones.... Fram, Purolator, PEP Boys etc...
Witch hazel won't work... I usually used mobil1 at 7500 mile change intervals... Usually the 5w-30 extended change with the gold cap or the 0w-40 euro one (which DOES meet the OEM specs). I never cared for amsol...too many folks sell it posting rave reviews to help the brand since it is sold by "dealers".... Also they say it would meet the BMW specs if tested...key IF tested...take their word for it?! Exxon/Mobil tested their oil...sure it cost them $$, but why not amsol? They say due to $$ and charge you 2x the cost....IMO redline, Royal purple, etc are all over rated... Same reason...its cheaper to do more frequent oil changes with a good product like mobil1.
