Shift lock? Do you mean lock out reverse when you are in 3rd or any other forward gear?

I do not think MINI locks out gears at all (in a stick) car. If I was an idiot I could go from 1st to 2nd to 3rd and then slam it in reverse. Now if I did this I would expect to see transmission in parts behind me when I come to a stop.:lol::lol:

Its suposed to be a hard push or at least an effort to get it in reverse standing still or moving from what i hear. This is as smooth as going from 1 to 2 its ok downshifting but at the lights it gets scetchy

Yes you do have to push it a little harder to move the lever into revers. I believe it is the shifter mechanism. But I can't be sure. I could check the Bentley manual but will not be home for a few more days.

I do believe the "extra oompf" that acts as the reverse lockout is part of the one shifter cable, or part of the transmission itself. I have my old shifter assembly in the garage at home, I can take a look at it this evening to verify that it isn't part of that.

No springs in the shifter assembly. It's either in the cables or trans.
