Hello all, new to the forum. Hope someone can help. Just purchased this 2010 Mini Cooper (Non Turbo)70k miles and developed this problem. After the car warms up to operating temperature It develops a bad mis. Code reader shows p2187 and p0303 Misfire on cylinder 3. Engine shaking violently then a Knock comes.:eek:ut:
I tried to swap coils, no difference
    Swap spark plugs, no difference
Did try Seafoam Thru pcv no difference
It runs fine when cold then when warms misfire occurs.:mad2: I taken the car out after plug swap and ran the piss out of it seems to drive fine until you come to a stop then engine wants to stall/and die. Lots of hesitation when take off and smoke out tailpipe. doesn't seem to smoke when driving.
Has anyone had this issue. Not close to a Mini Dealer, and really don't trust them anyway.
    Thank in Advance.

Welcome to M/A! Sorry, as an owner of 3 Gen 1 MINIs, I cannot help you either, but there are a lot of Gen 2 members here who can and will be of help.

    Welcome Aboard!
I too have a gen 1 but I'll try to help anyway.

If you run hard when it's warm is it okay? If so then it sounds like your not getting fuel. That could be anything from clogged injectors, dirty fuel filter, or bad pump.
Was the code for the same cylinder after you changed plugs and coils?

Welcome to MA. Where are you located?

Because you may have very bad Carbon build up on the back of the valves that may need cleaned by a Walnut Blasting.

You just have to find someone (besides the Stealership) that has the tools to do it and they are much cheaper than the Stealership.

    misfire

Yes MRNTD when you're on the throttle it seems fine, And the misfire reads in the same cylinder #3. Do you think I should swap injectors before purchasing one?
Still gett p2187 code too lean @ idle
I will get a fuel filter and try that.
I though the carbon buildup thing was with the turbo models on exhaust valves. Thanks Dave.O

In the morning when cold its starts fine, runs fine 3 minutes later after something warms up it misfires. Is it possible the Crank position Senor is the culprit?

Yeah...carbon should only be an issue on the DI cars, aka TURBO....
But the thought that there might be a hotspot in the cylinder, like carbon, causing the pre-ignition might have merit....
Plug looks ok? Any chance you tried a compression check?
Usually compression goes UP as a motor warms up, masking issues, likewise with higher rpms..worn clearances tighten up...

    misfire

Zippy thanks for the insite. Haven't tried compression check yet, guess i need to borrow a tester.
Number 3 plug did have more carbon on it when I pulled the plug. Cleaned it in my media blast cabinet. Then switched it, same problem.. also tried coil swap.
Why would the carbon build on just one cylinder?

The fuel injector is supposed to spray the fuel in a very fine mist in order to get good complete combustion. The problem might be caused by a buildup around the injector, you might be getting incomplete combustion. Your injectors may need to be cleaned or replaced.

Just had this exact same problem with mine.... (2010 clubman 59k "justa) Codes it threw we're bad coil... Thermostate was stuck (which was replaced 6 mo ago) and it threw and 02 sensor code. I did end up changing out plugs as you did (also no help) I did end up with one new coil and new thermostat the 02 sensor code cleared itself when everything else was fixed. Total repair cost $650 at a very trusted shop. However they broke my grill but that's another story.

Yah mine was stuck open and my clubby is a diva. She is very specific on gas. She's only fond of Chevron highest octane... But when mine was idling rough and I turned on the A/C it got so much worse.... The thermostat was about 250$ but she's running like a champ now. The only indicator that came on way my check engine that would intermittently blink depending on RPM and she was gutless....

Hope it's an easy fix and you are back on the road soon.

    #kcco.
