I just got a 2008 mini cooper hatchback S and it has the navigation installed where the spedometer is. . It is an older version, does anyone know if I can upgrade this to a newer system since it was dealer installed? Also, I connected my Bluetooth phone but don't know if there's a way to connect my Bluetooth for media in this system.
Are you sure it was dealer installed? A dealer retrofit of speedo to navigation is extremely rare because of the very high cost (I'd guess at least $4K). Upgrading the system would also be fairly expensive (although you may be able to find used components) and requires programming by the dealer. As for Bluetooth, your 2008 system doesn't support Bluetooth media audio through A2DP. MINI was very slow adopting technology and it wasn't available until newer models. In the meantime, you'd have to use an aftermarket Bluetooth model for this feature. Sorry that I didn't have anything encouraging to tell you. Welcome anyway (I see it's your first post).
I've got one of these I'll let you have cheap. I don't need it since I traded my R56. Belkin Hands-Free Bluetooth Car Kit http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004CLYJ2I?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage
There are many Mini models with navigation that comes with it. I have had many people confirm you cannot install this where the speedometer is unless it came like that with the car. Its just an older model. But also, I heard there are discs you have to buy that update the maps on the navigation ?
MINI upgraded the navigation system in 2011 with new electronics and higher resolution screen. I thought that's what you meant when you asked about how to "upgrade" your navigation. If you only want to update the maps, you can purchase new DVD maps at the dealer or online for $200. You might also be able to find used and "copied" discs on eBay.

The Nav system is integrated with a different stereo unit in the center console, as pictured here. Your car would have to be reprogrammed for Nav, and there are generally issues with installing a used speedo or Nav because it includes electronics that stores the odometer and therefore tied to the VIN.
