Hey guys, new here and did some searching, and I couldn't find an answer to my problem. I have an 09 r56 JCW bone stock, no tune, no aftermarket parts. I was driving one day and my diverter valve sounded like a dove between shifts and the car went into limp mode no turbo spool threw a diverter valve code (I will post later when I have my scan tool I don't remember it.) I did some reading and found the diverter valves get fragile so I replaced it hoping the code would go away. It didn't. So I hooked up my scan tool and watched a few parameters, and noticed my boost pressures looked a little high. I took it to Mini paid $145 for the guy to tell me everything is working like it should it is getting too much boost and he's never seen an overboost issue. So no resolve. It only happens when the engine is at operating temp. The longer I drive the easier it is to make it happen and I can't have fun driving in limp mode. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to make it clear.
So the car goes into limp mode, you take it to the dealer and pay them $145 for diagnostics. The tech says everything is working correctly but the car still goes into limp mode. Hmmm, doesn't put much confidence in the tech. What it the actual code that is being triggered? If you're overboosting then it could be a wastegate issue. EDIT: You said you monitored boost pressure, and it was a little high. I don't think limp mode kicks in until +22 psi.
Yeah the tech that was working on it has been doing it since they came out with the r56 chassis. I myself am a BMW tech but I have no access to diag equipment at the moment. I went back in the shop and ran the test modules for everything and he wasn't just pulling my leg. As for the boost pressure its reading on my scan tool at around 30psi. I don't know if that's actual or I need to convert it or something. My wife took off with my scan tool this morning so I can't get you the code. But it was diverter valve plausibility or something like that. Like a 28AA is what I think it was but I will update when my wife gets home.
I think the first thing you should do is get you wife her own scan tool so she will stop running off with yours and doing who knows what.
Ok the code is P28AA. Any info on this code would be appreciated. I have no starting issues since that seems to be related. Remember I did change the diverter valve and the old one was baked lol.
Have you seen this post at NAM? I queried Google, "P28AA Bypass Valve Error" and found this. https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/r56-hatch-talk-2007/238653-2007-mcs-jcw-lost-power.html Someone had the same code, replaced his diverter valve, still had code. It turned out he left a part from the old diverter valve on the car when he installed the new one.
I know I am not much help on this sense I am just getting in to the Gen2 cars, I am a Gen1 guy. But I have read somewhere that when the stock diverter fails it will through parts in to the turbo. I plan on installing this one on my wife R57 and my R58 as preventive maintenance. http://www.gfb.com.au/products/blow-off-and-diverter-valves/dv-plus/dv-t9352-suits-mini-citroen-and-peugeot-application-detail
Ok update I GOT IT FIXED!!!! Dneprdave Thank you thank you. I searched and searched to no avail. That post was exactly what I was looking for. I don't understand why I couldn't find it with a Google search. I have been literally looking for months. Stupid Mini tech and stupid me for not using a flash light to check for anything in the hole lol. I guess I got a little excited and wanted it fixed so bad hahaha.
I don't have any codes but I do have a question. This MINI is my first ever forced induction vehicle and I'm not familiar with the differences between a Diverter Valve and a Blow off valve (I know one recirculates and one vents to atmosphere). Should I hear a release of pressure from the DV that sounds very similar to a blow off valve once I let off the gas? It's sounded like a Blow off for almost as long as I've owned the car. Is it safe to assume that the DV is torn?
Do you have an aftermarket intake? If the sound of the intake isn't insulated well you can hear the dump of air into the intake from the DV. I forget which brand I was looking at before I sold my R56 but there was an aftermarket intake company that had a well perfodming and noisy intake. You could hear the diverter dumps clearly when you snapped off the gas. If you had a torn DV then you would most likely throw a code but if it didn't there would be noticeable lag in the turbo and a general loss of power. There are aftermarket BOVs for the R56 but in general they just "sound cool" and leave the engine running rich if not properly tuned.
10-4, thanks! I do have a DOS-ish style intake. The reason I've recently been researching them is due to the DV not always opening up upon start up when it was cold last week. I wasn't getting the usual hiss from the intake so I started looking up how to know if my DV is bad. I'm at 93k so she may be on the way out. Thanks again!
I just copied the concept :cornut: With the bends it's not AS loud as the normal DOS config, originally ran it straight in but it was too loud.
