We've decided it's time there was a consolidated and hopefully helpful resource here on M/A where you can learn about recalls. This thread is for general discussion but there's also a more organized and less cluttered version as an article in the Library. Whenever there's a new recall thread in the forums, we'll also put a link to the thread in here and then add pertinent info to the Library article. Speaking of, here's a direct link: MINI Safety Recalls - Library There already are recall related threads scattered around here on M/A. If you know where they are, help me out by posting links below. Let's start with some tools available to us all on the Interwebs. MINI has a search page for OPEN safety recalls, just punch in your VIN: Find Open Recalls I think 'open' means if there is a recall associated with your MINI it will only show up in the search results if it has NOT already been repaired. Particularly helpful if you're not the original owner. On the other hand, I'm the original owner of an '07 Honda Element and recently used the govt's similar VIN search to learn there are three open recalls and I haven't been notified by Honda about any of them...and one is for the brakes and was issued in 2010! Moral of the story: don't assume, check. If you don't trust MINI -- and if you suspect there might be a recall you haven't been notified about I imagine you might just have trust issues -- try the government's version: https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/ Do yourself a favor and read the lists in the box below the VIN search tool to learn what the tool does and does not cover. If you don't find any recall info but you're still suspicious or would like to know whether others have been reporting particular safety issues for which there aren't yet any recalls, here's another tool from the gov't that allows you to search more generally for safety issues by year, make and model: Keeping You Safe | Safercar | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Read carefully on that opening page and you'll notice there's also a way you can make your own safety complaint.
Depends on what they consider a safety problem. My only major problem was the well known "death rattle" from the timing chain on the N14. It was never a recall, but more a technical bulletin that the individual dealer could replace at their discretion. I got lucky and my dealer sprung for the entire cassette replacement and provided a loaner car. Others were not so lucky. I guess it's not a safety problem if your engine seizes up. I did find out one thing though. If my HPFP fails I'm outa luck since the extended warranty ran out 9K miles ago.
One thing to consider.... Most of the HPFP failures occurred early in their life... You got a good one... Although expensive, they seem to be easy to replace...
