does anyone from around here have a SC pulley puller. and belt tool i could borrow? i don't have the money to buy my own right now yet my parents bought me a pulley for graduation. i live in Merrimac, MA. ill drive to come get them Thanks, Ben P.S. is there a place to rent them?
If you don't have it yet, you will need a shorter SC belt. I can't remember the part number but someone here will be able to help. To take off the old belt you can put a socket on the bolt that holds the tensioner to the engine, bolt number 5. You may have to jack up the motor to get the socket on the bolt. Then let it back down. This will keep your pry bar from slipping so you can release the old belt. I believe Detroit Tuned has a rental puller. You could get the correct belt from them also. A normal puller can be used, but it has to be perfectly straight or the pulley won't come off. I would find the tool. Good luck
Greasys garage in Worcester MA does lots of pullies....heck mine was done years ago...in less than 30 minutes, no joke....with motoring season in full swing, they are booking about 2 weeks out....but might be worth a call....sometimes getting a pro can be cheaper no rental, and they can inspect your car, give you some tips....Possibly saving you big $$ in the future with their insights...
PS....the belt tool is skippable....but the puller is not...unless you have a cutoff wheel...a real pain....
Having the right tool to do the job is very important, but also having the know how is even more important. We do rent the tools, but paying someone that has installed many is worth it in the long run for the weekend shade tree. Detroit Tuned MINI Cooper S Tools
Ahhh Yes, truer words were never spoken. A pulley swap in not a tire or spark plug swap, proceed with caution. :nonod: Some things like this are better left to those that do this for a living.
Hey everyone, sorry it took so long to respond, but I've watched my brother do pulleys on his '05 R53 and his friends '06 I have the skills to do it, I've replaced my crank position sensor, water pump, starter, and clutch; so I'm confident in my abilities, plus I hope to some day be a professional and I've got plants of help if I'm not sure of something. I plan on investing in a belt tool at some point because I'll need it down the road, but the puller I don't want to spen 70 bucks on something I'll use once. And yes I ordered the correct size belt, I ended up just getting the pulley package from wmw, so it came with the pulley, belt, and colder JCW plugs. And whoever said you can get away without the belt tool, how do you go about it? Just grab a breaker bar, pull, then put the locking pin in place?
just buy the tool... ~$50 here (incl. shipping). You're going to dork something up if you try to do it without it. Plus, you'll use it again anyway when you go to replace the belt after it stretches.
Yes but you will need a helper to put the pin in. Look at my first reply. Putting a socket on the bolt I described gives you a better footing to pry on. I just use a long pry bar, be carefully it slips off very easily. One thing you need to learn is every time you do a job it's time for a new tool! This becomes more important when you get married! Good luck! Let us know how it works out.
Thanks! That's the cheapest one I've seen, I'll probably go that route. I've heard if some people making their own? Like buying some steel flat bar, bolting them together and drilling a hole fit over the bolt on the tensioner? Is that worth it, an hour and 10 dollars worth if steel and hardened bolts would be cheaper than the tool, but not if it's gonna be a pain in the ass
Naw....don't build one... A socket on the pivot point bolt and prybar works...then have a helper pin the tensioner...but to build one is over the top IMO...yes...the ease of use makes the tool useful...you can do it alone...but a helper (wife or girlfriend really) and you can use the 2 person non tool way...
When I have mine done I have a guy with a Blue Mohawk at Helix do it every Spring before MOTD. A new tensioner and belt is only $100 bucks and I get to hang out at Helix and BS while my car prepped for the Dragon. I have everything checked including brakes and have the following changed Oil, brake flush, belt & tensioner, coolant flush.
I thank you have been sanding to long!:lol::lol: it's much funner to bust your hand a time or two. Then have your daughter drive you to the hospital to get stitched up. Oh wait we are talking pulley, I got the stitches doing the control arm bushings.
