I've never driven a MK2 16v, but I have some time in an 8v version. Pretty fun car back in the day. This is the grandfather to my bread van. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw-OV2KV-Z8"]1990 Volkswagen Mk2 GTI: The People’s Sports Car - YouTube[/ame]
Those were great cars.. loved them. They are returning on the tuning scene also. Couple buddies of mine had them. Good find!
My only experience with early GTI's was driving a friends 86 MK2 8v ITB car in a few races. Big fun & my first FWD experience. I've always liked GTI's & it only took me 32 years to buy one. :smile5:
Learned to drive stick on our families 1975 Rabbit, before getting my 1st car (70 Beetle). Never drove any newer VWs.
In the late seventies, my boss used to pick me up in the morning in a company VW Rabbit. The little Rabbit had a top speed of 108 mph, I know because that's how fast we went on the freeway everyday. It was a rural stretch of freeway with little morning traffic. My boss was a cockney gentlemen who ran an auction house in western Oregon, he had an English drivers license that looked like a passport, all his Great Britain driving infractions were listed in the pages of his drivers license. Oregon cops didn't know what to do with it when he handed over that license. They would just remind him to slow down because the national speed limit was 55 mph. On the rare occasion that he did get issued a ticket, he would just throw it away, the company car wasn't registered to him and the address in the licence was in London.
