Since the MINI Rallyman started running in WRC we've started plenty of threads here and I think they all have videos posted within. Feel free to root around for WRC threads in this forum if you haven't seen them yet.

This thread is for anything/everything else rally related. New, old, historics, RallyCross, hillclimb.....

Here's a start, 1990 WRC winner Ari Vatanen in a Puegot 405 Turbo Pikes Peak.

Hang in there through the intro, it's worth it.

If you can get your experienced co-driver to say "Dear God" on a stage you're either doing something very wrong or doing something very right.

A short bragging promotional video by Subaru but has some good clips. From David Higgins' recent win in Rally America's Rally in the 100 Acre Wood.

The 2013 Mexico round of the WRC is this coming weekend, good timing for this.

The original ‘Rally Mexico’ (MaxRally.com)
Quote:
by Anthony Peacock / 3rd March 2013

The original ‘Rally Mexico’ was the Carrera Panamericana of the 1950s.

It was first held in 1950 to promote the fact that the Mexican section of the Panamerican Highway (a road that runs through the entirety of Central and South America) had been completed.

To bring people’s attention to that fact, Mexico’s government came up with a nine-stage, five-day rally that covered 3300 arduous kilometres.

As an advertising concept it was an interesting one: probably similar to a brewery deciding to host a week-long nationwide drinking contest to celebrate the arrival of a newly-launched beer, if you think about it.

The original entry list consisted of 132 competitors made up of amateurs as well as professionals. A handful of them were even local taxi drivers, aiming to supplement their meagre incomes with the winner’s prize of $17,000: an unthinkable amount in the 1950s.

Back then, the Carrera Panamericana was also considered to be one of the most dangerous races in the world. Seat belts and roll cages were optional while a death wish was to some extent mandatory.

Local driver Jose Estrada, a veteran racer and Mexico City car dealer, declared before the 1951 race: “I’m going to win to win or die trying.” Let’s just say that he didn’t win, but at least he inspired rapper 50 Cent to come up with a catchy album title half a decade later.

Italian Formula One driver Felice Bonetto was killed after crashing out of the lead of the 1953 Carrera Panamericana when his Lancia hit a pavement and struck a building in the village of Silao – used as a time control on the way to the Guanajuato superspecial.

A more unusual accident occurred the year before when the factory Mercedes 300 SL of Karl Kling hit a vulture at almost 200 kph that came straight through the windscreen. Although co-driver Hans Klenk was briefly knocked unconscious by the impact, Kling and Klenk went on to take what was probably one of the most heroic victories in the history of motorsport.

Part of their success was down to the fact that Kling and Klenk had pioneered the use of pace notes on the event, by marking down the characteristics of the road ahead in detail on a map. Their system proved devastatingly effective, despite the absence of a ‘vulture over crest’ note that would have saved Klenk a mouthful of scavenger bird.

Eventually, all road rallies – followed in time by the sport we know today – went over to a pace note system, but they were first invented in Mexico.

The last real Carrera Panamericana was run in 1954, with the winning Ferrari driven by Umberto Maglioli recording a hair-raising average speed of 222 kph. These days, the average winning speed is more like 100 kph.

One final fact: the Carrera Panamericana became such a legend that it was the inspiration for Porsche to name its famous family of sports cars ‘Carrera’, while Ford named a limited edition of their Escort the ‘Mexico’ – after the company’s success in the 1970 London to Mexico Rally.

And here we were thinking that Mexico was a comparative newcomer to the sport…
And here's a video.
