But I bet he can't make 640 identical left turns in a row in one race without messing up. If it ain't NASCAR, it aint *****. :arf:
Rally drivers are > crazy fun. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmwdmItVyKw]YouTube - Rally Car Driver Is Very Lucky To Be Alive[/ame]
:devil:The last time that I drove like that on a road like that; we were in a Hum-V(military Hummer) carrying M16s,wearing camophlage, and in enemy territory. Jason
Yep. WRC drivers rock. Would have been my chosen career path if I knew then what I know now... and had money...
Nothing quite like opposite lock in a 6 ton M1114 while the turret gunner's kicking you in the shoulder to get you to settle down. That or having a (thankfully empty) support trailer catch some air and hit the back of the truck. Fixed it for you.
I remember powering through a mud pit in Bosnia while on patrol. The guy behind me with task force commander in his vehicle wasn't as lucky, or skilled and got his vehicle stuck with mud half way up the doors. I was sitting on top of my HMVV laughing my azz off. Made him carry the tow cables so I can pull him out. Hell, I wasn't gonna get dirty just because that fool couldn't drive.
Only 640? Isn't there a 500-lap race on one of the short ovals? That would be 1,000 u-turns in a row!
It's amazing that the driver is driving faster than the navigator can give instructions! She has a tough job being aware of what point they're at. (What are the numbers that she's reading out? An indicator of the sharpness of the turn? Some sounded like negative numbers.)
I think the numbers are what gear they should be in for the turn, so they know how fast to go. The whole thing is incomprehensible to me. I can't imagine driving that fast on a paved road, let alone on dirt through a forest!
The numbers indicate how tight the turn is. The lower the tighter, I believe. I did hear her call negative X and such. Looking at the video it would seem to indicate negative lock on the steering wheel. And although the video says polish driver, that looks like a privateer guy who ran WRC last season with his GF as a navigator. That must be one hell of relationship. Any time my wife gives me directions it ends up... not being good.
My wife is great at giving directions. She's the best co-driver I've ever had. Although back in the days of dinosaurs we did not use pace notes (blind rallies) just a route book. I find it amazing how fast crews can go using notes. It's beyond me how the co-driver can keep up with a fast shoe at the wheel. Great video!
That run isn't doing anything for their relationship either...tell me he doesn't say "F--- you" at about 3:46... It's amazing to watch these guys and I agree they're ballsier than any other out there. Reminds me a little of my early years and the gravel roads where I grew up...something I wouldn't even attempt to do again now. The only problem I have with WRC is I like to watch people actually racing each other, wheel to wheel, trying to pass, etc. Meh, I guess I like both. It's a hell of a thrill (rally); my adrenalin gets going just watching clips like that!
