Revised PWC Points Structure for 2017 (sportscar365.com)
Quote:
John Dagys | January 16, 2017

Pirelli World Challenge has revised the points structure for both the drivers’ and teams’ championships, as part of its integration with USAC as the championship’s new sanctioning body.

The sprint race championship has eliminated the SCCA-based points system in favor of a more simplified format, awarding the top-20 finishers with points, ranging from 25 points for a win, 23 for 2nd, 21 for 3rd, and decreasing to 1 point for 20th position.

Bonus points for pole position and fastest lap in Race 1 in each class will also remain, but at a single point each, instead of the previous 7 points.

The SprintX points structure will mirror Sprint races, but will be awarded per driver pairing, unlike last year’s individual points system for the two-driver, pit stop race format.

Points in the manufacturer’s championship remain unchanged, with 10 points for the winning car, 8 for second, 6 for third and so on. One bonus point for pole will also continue.

According to PWC President and CEO Greg Gill, the overhaul was made to simplify the overall process, in the wake of recent incidents involving points-related mishaps with the previous scoring and timekeeping system.

“Our goal is to have it be smoother for our competitors, easier to understand, and I think particularly now what we’ll look at is, how points are being scored within SprintX,” Gill told Sportscar365.

“That’s going to be intriguing. I won’t add any more comment into it until we get to VIR and we see how that rolls out, but I think it’s going to make for some exciting racing and more fair not only to the drivers but to the teams and driver to understand the system and follow on track.”

Also new for 2017 will be an overall GT champion for Sprint and SprintX combined, along with individual champions for GT Pro and GT Am (Sprint), GT Pro-Pro, GT Pro-Am and GT Am-Am (SprintX).

Combined GT Cup and GTS champions will also be awarded between the Sprint and SprintX series, although SprintX will be optional for GTS competitors.

The PWC season kicks off at St. Petersburg on March 10-12 with Sprint races for GT/GTA/GT Cup and GTS, with the SprintX season getting underway at Virginia International Raceway on April 28-30.

Panoz to PWC.

Panoz Avezzano to Start PWC Season With GTS Homologation (sportscar365.com)
Quote:
John Dagys | February 1, 2017

The Panoz Avezzano will start life as a Pirelli World Challenge GTS-spec car, before a planned transition to SRO GT4 homologation, according to Panoz Racing Team boss Tom Milner.

Milner has revealed further details on the team’s planned two-car PWC effort, which is set to see Ian James debut the V8-powered car in next month’s season-opener at St. Pete.

“Right now we are trying to get a car together and overcome the political hurdles. The GTS car, because we race in that series, it makes more sense,” Milner told Sportscar365.

“We have a much better opportunity to get the project on its legs quicker. The essential parts of the car will be built to GT4 rules, but you can always do that once you know [the details].

“In order to get the program going, it’s better to call it a GTS car.”

With two cars already in build, Milner said an initial test is planned at a “top secret” location on March 1-2, ahead of the PWC season-opener nine days later.

A final decision on whether the team would debut with two cars has not yet been made.

Tom Milner ran the PTG team for many years, all in BMW. And his son is one of the factory Corvette drivers in the Rolex series.

In IMSA the two NSXs have the same colors but in a reverse or mirror-image. Looks like they're also doing the mirror-image livery thing for PWC.

PWC is at VIR this weekend and it's also the first SprintX round of the season.

I'm still trying to figure out SprintX. In case there are any others...

Here's the SprintX schedule for the weekend (you can watch it (but just the actual races) here: http://world-challenge.com/streamvideo/ )

36 SprintX cars, lineups pack variety, diversity at VIR (motorsports.nbcsports.com)
Quote:
By Tony DiZinno | Apr 24, 2017

No less than 36 cars are set to compete in the first of five Pirelli World Challenge SprintX weekends, this weekend at VIRginia International Raceway.

Breaking down those 36 cars, they’re split this way:

12 GT Pro/Pro
16 GT Pro/Am
1 GT Am/Am
1 GT Cup Pro/Am
1 GT Cup Am/Am
2 GTS Pro/Am
3 GTS Am/Am

And that’s before you get to the rest of the entry list: GTS: 9; GTSA: 10; TC: 32; TCA: 15; TCB: 8.

In sports car racing, the easiest way to get hooked is to embrace the variety and diversity of machinery first and ask questions about how complex it is later.

So with that in mind, here’s a breakdown of the GT SprintX entries (which themselves are split between three classes, but we’ll set that aside for a minute) and their respective lineups.
