IMSA 2018

A bit early for this thread but might as well get started.

Weathertech (lifted from sportscar365.com):
Quote:
IMSA has released the 2018 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship schedule, which again features 12 events, highlighted by the previously announced change from Circuit of The Americas to Mid-Ohio, elimination of the GT Daytona class at Long Beach and date changes.

The Rolex 24 at Daytona will again kick off the season on Jan 25-28, followed by the second round of the Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup at Sebring in March.

The 100-minute Long Beach race on April 13-14, will revert to Prototype and GT Le Mans-only, prior to IMSA’s return to Mid-Ohio in May with all three classes in action, with P and GT Daytona in action in Detroit.

Back-to-back races are again scheduled for Watkins Glen and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park over the Fourth of July holiday, followed by the GT-only round at Lime Rock and Road America in its now-traditional early August date.

Dates for the final three rounds of the season at Virginia International Raceway (GT only), Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and the ten-hour Motul Petit Le Mans, meanwhile, have all been adjusted by a week, but with no changes to the current length or race formats.

2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Schedule:
Jan. 5-7 – Roar Before the Rolex 24
Jan. 25-28 – Daytona International Speedway*
Mar. 14-17 – Sebring International Raceway*
Apr. 13-14 – Long Beach Street Circuit (P and GTLM only)
May 4-6 – Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

Following Mazda Team Joest’s two-day test, Acura Team Penske has arrived at Daytona International Speedway for the first running of its Acura ARX-05 on the Florida high banks, in preparation for January’s Rolex 24 at Daytona.

All four of the team’s full-season drivers were present for the two-day test on Thursday and Friday.

It comes ahead of an IMSA test at Daytona on Dec. 5-6 in which all new or modified cars, including the Acura DPi, are required to take part.

No major issues have been reported with the car after this week’s running and Juan Pablo Montoya has praised the team’s success so far.

“I think the reliability of the car has been unbelievable,” he said. “We have no issues. Acura came out with an engine that just runs.

“It’s great to see and I think it’s very important. Pace, we’ve still got to work on it a little more, but I think it’s still early days for the car.”

Helio Castroneves explains that part of the test has been in order to help he and Montoya get more accustomed to the car and learn from teammates Ricky Taylor and Dane Cameron who have much more experience in sports cars than the open wheel aces.

“Ricky and Dane, they are champions in the series,” Castroneves said. “Actually, they have more experience than me and Juan Pablo as well.

“We like having them as a reference to learn details. We’re talking about traction control, we’re talking about power steering, I mean, there’s a lot of things that, in IndyCar, we don’t use.

“So now, going through that transition, I’m glad to have those guys to be able to smooth it out. I’m excited. I’ve got the champ in my car, and Juan Pablo also has a champ in his car.

“It’s fun. We’re the older guys, but at the same time, we’re rookies. There’s nothing wrong with learning, always, and especially with those guys.”

Graham Rahal, who will join the team for Daytona and the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, was also present on Friday.

Mazda, Joest Begin U.S. Testing Program With Revised DPi (sportscar365.com)

Mazda Team Joest has begun its U.S.-based testing program with a heavily revised Mazda RT24-P this week at Daytona International Speedway, in the ramp up to the program’s debut in January’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season-opener.

The two-day test, which kicked off on Tuesday, has seen Tristan Nunez, Jonathan Bomarito, Joel Miller and Spencer Pigot share driving duties of the car, which has undergone significant updates from Multimatic in recent months.

Bomarito, Nunez and Audi ace Rene Rast took part in an initial shakedown of an interim car last month at Hockenheim, followed by a test at Donington Park with Bomarito at the wheel.

Tuesday’s track action marked the first mileage of what is expected to be the car’s final configuration, which will be presented to the FIA, ACO and IMSA for LMP2 and DPi homologations.

“It feels completely different now. It’s so confidence-inspiring to see the changes made to how it is on track. It’s a completely different car,” Nunez told NBC Sports’ Tony DiZinno following the first day of the test.

“It seemed like the car was a lot more compliant. It’s easier to drive. It wasn’t doing anything ‘evil.’

“You knew what it’d do, and it did it every time. At times before, you didn’t know what you were getting yourself into. Now it’s a lot more confidence-inspiring.”

While driver lineups are not expected to be announced until early next month, Nunez and Bomarito, along with the potential of Miller, are all likely to be retained as full-season pilots.

Ex-Audi LMP1 ace Oliver Jarvis has been also linked to a full-time seat, with Rast and Pigot expected to be the team’s third drivers for the Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup races.

Looking forward to it... getting better and better. The crazy one will be Sebring 2019 with a Double header.. and the WEC cars back. Basically they will do the 10hr race, then start the WEC 10hr at 12am.. Crazy.. but super cool IMO.

LOVING to see these cars really back on the track. I think this has the potential to be a great racing year for ALMS... uh I mean Weathertech.
