Owners manual mentions backup sensors but they don't sound when I'm near an object while backing up in my recently purchased 08 Clubman S. Is this an option I may not have? Are they visible?

I would say that if you don't have the sensors on the bumper where you can see them, then you don't have them. My truck has them and you can see the round sensors mounted on the bumper. The owners manuals cover every option.

My wife's car has them and there are 4 that are cleary visible along the back bumper. Just wasn't sure if these are configured in some other way. Thanks for the response!

I have an '08 MCS with the back-up sensors. They work great and look like most of the typical sensors on other cars. Sorry that the photo is a bit small....and dirty boot.

Umm, yeah, my '05 'vert has them. Right next to the right one is the dimple to remind me not rely on them 100%. Old School 101: Place your right hand on the passenger seat, turn your head over your right shoulder and watch where you're going as you're backing up.

Always stop backing when you hear that unexpected thump.

If you have nav it also shows a nice graphical display of your clubman with a triangle sonar looking image coming off the back and as soon as you put it in reverse and then as you get near something it goes from green to yellow to I guess red (never been that close).

A pic showing how the backup sensors work graphically on the LCD (If you have Nav or Connect). You also get an audio sound as well.
