ICANN developed the New generic Top-Level Domain Program to increase competition and choice by introducing new gTLDs into the Internet’s addressing system. What is a gTLD? It is an Internet domain name extension such as the familiar .com, .net, or .org. Anyone could apply for a Top Level Domain name, but cost is a factor. The application fee is $185,000 with an annual fee of $25,000 The first domains should be processed in about 9 months. The we will start to see such domains as .PIZZA, .GOOGLE, .APPLE More Info: Update: US companies show most interest in new top-level domain names - Computerworld List of Names applied for: http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/program-status/application-results/strings-1200utc-13jun12-en
Right after someone provides the application fee and 10 years worth of annual fees. You volunteering?
They are in Alpha order.... Fiat has also requested AlfaRomeo, FIAT, Ferrari, Case, CaseIH, IVECO, Lancia and NewHolland. Look up all the ones for Charleston Road Registry Inc.. That would be Google. There are a ton of them.
There is a 28 page guide for that. See http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/applicants/agb/string-contention-procedures-04jun12-en.pdf if really interested.
So in my future I will be going to www.miniusa.mini? Seem redundant. However Www.wickedfast.mini has a nice ring to it. And then there is always www.justajim.mini for the non S crowd
Yes and No... Anyone can apply for one of these new top level domains but beside the cash you have to prove can support the domain too. What is predicted is some companies such as Google that is trying to get the .FAMILY domain is they will then allow people to register a domain for their family, and provide hosting and all the other stuff that goes along with it. In effect competeing with companies like GoDaddy for domain registrations. Just that Google would control all of the .FAMILY domains. You could have wwwScottInBend.Family. Others such as the TV network ABC may create URLs such as www.TVshowName.ABC
That's kinda what I was wondering. Companies pay for a .????? and then they can do with it as they see fit.
Makes sense for the Family example above but many others .airbus seem pointless. As 05r50 mentioned airbus.airbus seems redundant and I can't see them selling off too many possible names to others. I assume that the vast majority of these companies will also keep their old .com domains.
