Brake pad sensor light came on today and that means it's time to upgrade pads and rotors. My application is mainly spirited street and some track. I want something better than OEM. I was thinking brakeman super brakes but not sure the price and if there may be a similar but cheaper option. I do have JCW brakes and not sure about the size on them and want to consider all my options. What is everyone else using? And what are your thoughts on certain brake options for JCW brakes? (mainly rotors as pads are an easier decision for me). Please keep it to JCW brakes, thanks!
If the brake light came on you will need to replace the brake wear sensors too. Talk to crashton about brake pads and such....he's our MoM brake guru!
:cornut: To explain some terms first, my Margi is an 08 R56 MCS/JCWm with standard R56 MCS brakes. These brakes however(y'all correct me if I err), are the exact same brakes as the R53 JCW brakes. That being said, I run EBC REDSTUFF and @ ~ 75kmi, she's never worn out a brake disc/rotor, only pads. She stops on a Dime yielding 9cents change, in a hurry! She's very spirited street only. Jason
I think you're correct; standard r56 brakes = JCW r53 brakes. However, the r56 JCW brakes are Brembo. That I think is the most confusing part about JCWs and not articulated very well by me and is also why I kept getting confused on sizes for rotors and which rotor to go with.
:cornut: Yes Sir. To the best of my knowledge, you are correct. So........you're wanting to install eqivalent R56 JCW brakes on your MINI? Jason
No, I have JCW brakes and want to know what best aftermarket rotors and pads to go with. What is the size rotor on the JCW and what brand options do I have and what are the best brands? Sorry if I was confusing. Basically; I have an idea to go with brakeman rotors and pads but want to seek out all my options before laying down that much cash... it's really going to eat into my modding budget/my budget to get the RMW street header.
Oh heck, the consensus seems to be Red stuffs are the bees knees. I'll be putting those on this year along with a new set of EBC slotted rotors. I hate brake dust & the Red are supposed to dust a lighter color dust. I'm running Akibono ceramic pads now with Stop Tech cryo slotted rotors. The rotors have lasted a long time, 3 sets of pads to one set of rotors. I think the cryo treatment may be the reason for the longevity of the rotors. Cryo treating costs more, not sure if it is worth the added cost. One more thing to think about, change out your brake fluid. I'd also recommmend going with a set of SS brake lines. I bought mine from Chad at Detroit Tuned. He should also be able to help with pads & rotors. You might want to call him & talk brakes. Detroit Tuned Stainless Steel Brake Lines
Thanks, I'll give him a call. I had the intent on putting stainless steal lines on when I did the brakes; and evidently I need to get new sensors. But is there a size for the JCW rotors? I can't find it anywhere.
If I understand your setup correctly your car is an 06 with the JCW kit. If that is right then your rotors are the R56 MCS size. (I have the brembos so I can't tell what size your are). Anyone agree? Chad's site hase these. http://www.detroittuned.com/sp-performance-r56-cooper-s-r53-jcw-front-rotor/ which are 294mm = 11.5 inches approx. Whew. Where's my whiskey. I have worked up a thirst.
I have some Glenlivet 15 year scotch, Willett bourbon, or Maker's Mark. Your pick! I could not find the size to save my life, so thank you!
Heck I'd have a beer & call Chad. :beer If you feel you don't need sensors you can strip the wire ends & solder them together. No more light & no more sensors. :biggrin5: If you like sensors Chad has those too.
Yes the Redstuff pads are what I prefer and work great. As for rotors we have some great cost effective WMW rotors Plain face: WMW John Cooper Works Brake Rotors R50 R53 R52 - Way Motor Works JCW Drilled/Slotted: WMW Drilled/Slotted John Cooper Works Brake Rotors R53 R52 - Way Motor Works As for the sensor you can tie it together or replace it. Just depends on if you want the light to come on next time or not.
Thanks Way! It looks like red stuff is the way to go, unless I go with brakemans setup. Still contemplating rotors though. P.S. I love my 16% pulley; can't get off the throttle.
