Out of SLO headed north up Hwy 1 through Morro Bay and San Simeon to Nacimiento-Furgussion Rd. Follow the twisty Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd into Fort Hunter-Liggett and over to Mission San Antonio de Padua. After a visit at the mission head back through Paso Robles to San Luis Obispo. Point A/G (Mile 0): Start at Coast BMW in San Luis Obispo on Los Osos Valley Rd (LOVR). Point B (Mile 6): Head north on LOVR to Turri Rd. Nice little twisty road but watch for bicyclist. - Connect with Hwy 1 in Morro Bay and head north along the coastline. - Look for Zebras on the east side of Hwy 1 near Heast Castle in San Simeon. Point C (Mile 44): Stop for great sandwiches at Sebastian's General Store in San Simeon. Heast Castle in on the mountain above San Simeon. - Continue north up the ragged Hwy 1 coastline to Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd in the Big Sur area. - There is an Elephant Seal viewing point at Piedras Blancas, on Hwy 1 about 4 miles north of San Simeon. There is large parking lot along the ocean so it is easy to spot the location. Very interesting if you have never stopped to see the large seals. Point D (Mile 79): Turn east onto Nacimiento-Furgusson Rd. The road raises quickly above Hwy 1. There are about 200 turns in the first 16 miles. There was a lot of 1st/2nd gear driving, like a long Auto-X track. The road is about 1.75 lanes wide so be aware of on-coming vehicles but there is enough room for on-coming traffic to pass with just a slow-down. We had very little on-coming traffic and did not catch any vehicles going our direction. The road is a paved and well maintained (in much better condition than Hwy 1). Point E (Mile 104): Stop at Mission San Antonio de Padua. It is a beautifully restored California mission, well worth the stop. Point E (Mile 145): - From the Mission, head south-east on Nacimiento Lake Rd into Paso Robles to connect with US-101 and head south. Point G (Mile 186): Back in San Luis Obispo, CA. The route is great going clockwise or counter-clockwise. Clockwise (as described) is good because you head uphill on Nacimiento-Fergusson from Hwy 1. However, counter-clockwise is good because you get great views of the pacific ocean when coming down Nacimiento-Fergusson towards Hwy 1. See pictures from the CCMC club drive at: 11/06/10: Nacimiento - Fergusson Rd - a set on Flickr Here is a detail map of Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd from Hwy 1 towards Fort Hunter Liggett and Mission San Antonio de Padua. quikmni - This a great twisty road, I have run it many times. When it is clear, the views of the ocean from the road as you go up, up, up, to the redwoods are fantastic. We usually go from Highway 1 up Nacimiento Fergusson Road all the way through Fort Hunter Liggett and then north up to King City. You should document Highway 229 east of Atascadero too.
The Central Coast Mini Cooper (CCMC) group did the run about seven months ago so it will probably be a year or more before the CCMC group goes again. I will get SR-229 posted soon.
Nacimiento Fergusson rd. I did this drive many many times back in the 60's, and variations of it. It is a blast! If you do dirt roads then there are possibilities between "D" & "E" to go north to Carmel Valley Rd. Via Arroy Seco Rd. at least there used to be and from what I see now on Google Earth the roads look better! I was driving these roads in my Triumph (at least it was a British car!). Stephen
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I just found this forum! Anyways, Ive been on this road before several years ago on a Big Sur camping trip. Excellent recommendation! Cant wait to take my MINI on this cruise! Thanks for the write up!
