Debating which CAI to go with for my R56.

If you had to do it over would you do the one you have (assuming you have one) or would you do something different?

I have been researching this for my friends 09 JCW. The most functional looks to be the DDM RIS but you cannot use it with a strut brace.

The brace will hit the inner scoop of the RIS. So I'm looking for alternatives to the JCW STB.

I'm thinking the R56 X-brace by TSW might do the trick, if it provides the body stiffness my friend wants.

I use the DDM Works Street Intake with a M7 STB, but I had to cut the CAI to fit.

Guess I need to talk with the TSW folks and get on with it.

I was leaning towards the DDM RIS myself.

I too have a strut brace and had the same question. Way of Way Motor Work said he has done this CAI with the Strut Brace.

A friend from the local club here suggested the Defenders of Speeds CAI. Works on the theory of Cowl Induction. Read this article if interested, I'd wlecome your feedback

Cowl induction for cold, ram air for the Si? - 8th Generation Honda Civic Forum

At first my thinking was using the hood scoop to get as much air flow made the most. sense. Article changed my thinking, makes allot of sense to me. According to DOS they are seeing 10 whp on stock and upwards of 17 whp on cat backed equipped MINI's.

I have the Alta CAI. It performs & sounds great. But I am not crazy about how the mounting holes did line up very well. As much as they cost you would think it would line up perfectly.

If I were doing it over and I might, I would go with a DDM product or build my own with a K&N filter.

Well, I emailed with Dave @ DDM, he says the brace interferes with the DDM RIS. Hummm, I will have to email Way to see what he did. :aureola:

I have seen the DOS system on a JCW, also saw the results on a dyno with the DOS system. The JCW made a solid 215 WHP with the DOS, we did not have a baseline to compare. I suspect it is better at highway and getting better cold air.

This was on a DynoJet in Parker, Colorado, cool day in February. To compare my MCS with DDM Works Street made 205 WHP, stock exhaust system at that time. In fairness my 07 is a strong engine.

I still lean towards the DDM RIS as the system of choice. YMMV. :)

Ok, the MINI bottom of the front windsheild is a low pressure area. So getting air from there isn't going to be any big improvement. If your looking for an intake on an R56 don't be expecting big gains 5hp is usually it. The R56 builds so much heat in the intake that there just isn't big power there. Buy a cheap intake, you'll get the same sound. Now I do use the DDM RIS on our car, but I'm trying to get every last advantage I can at the track and it works great, around town it pretty much is the same as the lower priced street version. That's just the truth. Save your money for an intercooler, Exhaust and tuning. We've made big power with that stuff. Intakes are noise, same as the hoses.

I bought a $35 standard fit air intake from Autozone, removed the stock airbox and fit the intake on the end of the inlet tube. No real hp difference, but it sounds pretty decent for a very cheap mod. Releases pretty decent sound, and coupled with the Forge BOV I just added it sounds pretty mean.

I got the JCW unit, along with the JCW inlet tube at the same time. Probably not a big HP improvement, but it sounds better :D

Way, were you able to get the DDM RIS to work with any type of a STB?

    Thanks, Don

    Cheap True CAI?

Have looked at several CAI's for my R56. Most are not "cold air" intakes at all, but pull air from inside the engine bay and just make noise with little power gain. The M7 and DDM do use outside air but cost mucho dinero for the power gain and won't fit my CF straight tube STB. After insalling a ScanGuage, I saw air intake temp. differences of 15-40 degrees over outside air temps! Got this hair-brained thought to maybe wrap the stock intake tube with that aerogel backed silver foil blanket stuff. Also discovered that the grill is closed off to the direct flow of air to the air tube!? HHHMMMM, the gears are churning. Any drop in intake air temp equals more power. Will let you know if I take the plunge.

PS: Anyone know how to take off the intake tube?

I originally had the DDM Race Intake w/o the RAM air system, and recently went back to stock and a K&N filter. Noticed that the car now runs smoother (and quieter even with an HKS BOV) between shifts and the the intake air temperature is not that far off from ambient. As with the DDM, temperatures ranged from 8-10 degrees difference than ambient, and now with the stock it is 2-3 degrees difference, with an ambient temperature of about 66-67 degrees farenheit. If you want the sound, then get an aftermarket CAI. Otherwise stick with stock intake and drop in a K&N filter.

Follow up to my OP. Semi Expensive route taken to get me back to Way's advise which is spot on.

I got the DOS CAI, hated the sound, got a JCW Stage 1 Airbox with high flow air filter and haven't looked back
