Such a bizarre front nose..... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-ipmfPGFWM&hd=1]This is Caterham F1 2012 - Let's Go For A Ride - YouTube[/ame]
Well its not the most attractive F1 car in the lot...BUT, did anyone else notice the dynamic rear spoiler??? Any further info on this little piece of tech?
Yep, but it's no worse than most of the others this year: Ferrari: Mercedes: Force India: Sauber: Lotus: Toro Rosso: Williams: Red Bull:
The rear spoiler is part of the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_reduction_system"]DRS[/ame] system. This was introduced last year as a way to improve passing.
That's the DRS element (Drag Reduction System). It's meant to aid passing. Each circuit has one or two assigned DRS zones, they're always on straights. There's a detection line with a timing loop ahead of the zone. A driver following another is allowed to activate his DRS when he crosses into the DRS zone if and only if he crossed the detection line within a second of the car ahead. Push the button and you lose a bunch of drag and get an increase in speed.
I am thinking F1 needs to take a step back and get back to basics on things like aero. Those things are butt ugly.
