I clay bared my wife's car in preparation of adding some graphics. I used the Griot's clay bar and speed shine as lube as a lot of people here do. When I went to line up the graphics I found the painters tape wouldn't stick. I tried masking tape it wouldn't stick either. I used alcohol to remove the speed shine and all was good. But it made me think it the speed shine kept the tape from sticking is it keeping wax or paint sealer from adhering well to the paint too. What do the detailing experts say?
When applying a vinyl graphic, I first wash the area where the vinyl is to be applied, then clean it with denatured alcohol, flood it with clean water , dry it, and then apply the graphics. I will let it 'set' for a couple of days, then glaze and wax it.
Speed shine, or any detail quick touch up solutions have wax in them. Use a good car wash soap (careful, some of them have wax in them too) instead if you are going to apply graphics. Then apply wax afterwards.
After I found the tape not sticking I did use alcohol to clean the sides before putting the graphics on. But I would say that if you use a paint sealer instead of a wax it would be good to clean the speed shine/wax off, after clay baring, before applying.
