Well, I have not seen any real signs that I needed to do this, but with all the talk, of late, about oiled air filters, I went for it. It was actually very simple to do. I will take a test drive tomorrow and if I see any difference at all, I will post the results. Jim
I don't know if it as big a deal on these cars but I've done my fair share of MAF cleaning on Fords and it's day and night when they were dirty. Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk
Wait a minute...let me see if I'm understanding correctly. You cleaned your MAF and then you can actually w-a-i-t until tomorrow to test it out?! Sir, you certainly possess much more self-control than I do! Seriously, though...please post pics. opcorn: Erika
Jim, I'm *assuming* that your air flows through the MAF before the air box on a justa as it does on a 'S'. Is that correct?
Well, I did start it an hour or so after the cleaning to be sure it would. :cornut: Test drive in the AM. Night all. Jim
I don't know anything about an "S" or a "JCW". If the MAF is "before" the air box, then why is there even a concern about an oiled filter or any other debris for that matter? I thought that is why they told gmodder his problems started. :confused5: Jim
The OEM location always have the MAF after the air has been filtered. It helps to keep the birds and such from harming the sensor.
Search realoem for part number 13627542418 Or here: RealOEM.com  BMW R56 Cooper Intake muffler/Filter cartridge/HFM I'd link to the image but they don't like that.
Test Results: Went on my daily drive to where we keep some of our horses. I know this route and the readings I normally get, so this is where I wanted to try it out. I have picked up almost 3mpg. Can't really tell about the idle, since I have the torque arm bushing, but it might be smoother. I have been running a K&N filter the going on 2 years. I would say this helped, but it would not seem the MAF was really, really dirty. I now know how to do this on the 2009 justa, without taking everything apart now, so I will repeat a couple times per year. Can't hurt. Give it a try. Jim
Sweet. 3mpg is pretty dramatic. Thanks for documenting the results, Jim. I'd say this is something you should do as often as you change your spark plugs, 40-60k miles, or more if you use a reusable filter. Clean the filter, re-oil, and then clean the MAF a week later. My other car has a MAF sensor, and that's the maintenance interval I use.
There are def difference then, heres the R56 S, notice #13 before the airbox http://www.realoem.com/bmw/diagrams/h/d/342.png
That is actually after the airbox. The air feeds from the bottom of the box and out the top to the MAF in route to the turbo.
