Well it's that time... Again. It appears my competition clutch is finally letting go. Tonight I was riding on the highway and gave broknsmurf some gas (ok my foot was down) and all I got was super whine (fast revs no go) from what I can tell anything hard after second will slip at about 8 psi.

So now my question what clutch kit should I get? I'm currently running a competition clutch kit (lightweight flywheel, metal throw out bearing) so the typical valeo kit seems like a down grade.

I don't do any auto cross or tracking yet, I really want to get a daily driver before I beat him that bad. But I do lots of spirited driving.

I'm open to suggestions, I'd love to stay around 1k in parts as I'll be doing all the labor.

I went from a competition type clutch to the typical Valeo Kit. The car is so much more drive-able in daily traffic with hills and all the various stop/start situations one encounters. Don't regret the "downgrade" at all.

Thanks for the input Nathan, I know your mini puts down a lot more power than mine does. i guess I'll be considering the valeo, maybe with the extra savings I can finally get a quaife and install that while I'm in there again.

Like Nathan said the Valeo kit is much more reliable and easier to drive. I think you just got the most miles I've ever seen out of a Comp clutch though.

Yea way I think everytime I see you we talk about how surprised you are about the mileage on my competition clutch. I don't know the exact mileage but I got 50k+ out of it, almost hit the 3 year mark., I've never been very happy with the engagement point on it either Really I can probably get another 5 to 10k I just can't stomp the gas, 8 psi in 3rd and beyond wot makes it slip. 1st and 2nd gear I can still beat the snot out of it. I'm mulling over some ideas figure the end of the month will be when I tear broknsmurf apart again.

    Second wind???

Well today broknsmurf was riding well... Too well, in fact I couldn't get my clutch to slip at all while on the highway. I even tried shifting from 1st to 6th and passed that test. I already know what I'm buying for a replacement but I'm wondering if maybe they can be put off for a little while.

While on the topic, there isn't anything else that could be breaking that would give the symptoms of a slipping clutch is there? I mean besides being a torque monster and breaking traction at 90 hence making the RPMs rapidly increase.

I figure whatever it is, it will get worse and I will know for sure. Guess I'll keep my money on standby for now.

Possible oil on the clutch? Maybe?

I don't really ever have oil loss between changes, not to say it couldn't have just started. It started slipping again on my way home from school, it didn't do it right away, seems extended spirited driving makes it happen. Im wondering if its a warming up thing. Either way its slipping only way to find out is to get in there. Time to order parts....

Crank seal might not be a gusher.... Could be very very small amount of oil.... You won't really know until you get in there...

That was the issue I had, seal was weeping a little and got oil on the clutch. If OS Gieken would sell me just the clutch disk I'd have a great backup on hand just in case. But alas, they don't seem to sell just that part.

Wow Nathan you went from an OS Giken to the Valeo? Definitely helping my decision even more.

Jeff, I dunno what you're doing to your clutch. I'm at 149k on the original equipment - and you know I'm not driving like grandma :)

First one had to be changed because the throw out bearing was about to blow, the disk looked perfect. The current one well, as way said I've got the most mileage he's seen out of the comp clutch. Hopefully doing the valeo I can get over a 150k on it but we shall see, 100k I'll be happy lol.

So I am having an internal dilemma... perhaps you guys can help me. I decided I want to do a quaife while I'm replacing the clutch, I don't know if its the sticker shock, or the fact I probably shouldn't be dropping 1k on stuff I really don't need at the moment, but I'm having second thoughts on it. my question is does the quaife really make that much of a difference? I know in a track/autocross situation it does but I don't do either. All I ever do is tear up mountain roads. I would like to think someday I may track/autocross but in the near future I don't see it. In most circumstances I can shrug off my impromptu mods while fixing something broken, but pulling the trans is not exactly something quick and easy. I just want to know is it something I will have a wow moment with? or can I continue to live without it?

I also want to add, my past few times in the mountains/dragon I have been extremely happy with broknsmurfs performance.

    My thoughts....
While you are in there for the clutch work, don't pass up the chance to add the LSD...
If the price for the quaife is too much, maybe consider a used OEM LSD...

I passed it up last time lol, If I can find a used OEM LSD I would consider it for sure.

I have the oem LSD, ordered with my build. It was a $500 option, but I gladly bought the diff rather than the $500 DSC.

How does it work? I'm glad to have it, but it is not a very tight LSD. Yes it does help in some circumstances on the street. You can power through tight bends much easier. On the track it does help, at Nelson Ledges a track I've raced on many times it lets me come out of turn 13 onto the front straight without smoking the inside tire. I don't auto x, but I think it would help there a lot.

I'm with Metal Man Chuck, you are going to already be there so do it. I have no experience with a quaife in a MINI. From all accounts it is a nice diff, but expensive. You might try a factory LSD. Call Steven at eMINIparts.com he is very helpful.
