Opening a new thread for the upcoming Daytona race on Friday January 29, 2010. This race will be televised but the date has not been announced. I will post the info when I know. We will run two cars: 196 Randy Smalley and Owen Trinkler 197 Sara Cattaneo and VJ Mirayzan 198 is now a spare but will be ready if needed. Owen ran a 2:10.148 at the test last week. This was a top three overall time. The other drivers were nipping his heels running low to mid 2:11's. These are very good times for Mini's at Daytona where the Mini's 'flying brick' aerodynamics are a serious handicap. The cars make up for this handicap by being very quick in the infield and the bus stop. It should be an interesting race. It's not a track where the Mini's are historically competitive but we are turning some heads. We expect a large fan turnout just like last year. The paddocks are open at Daytona so attendees can get up close and personal. We really enjoy showing off the cars so plan on stopping by for pictures and a little bench racing. Damn I wish you guys were coming a bit closer to me this season....! I can't believe there are no west coast stops, but for Miller. Maybe I can get to Miller this year, economy coming back of course.....
Testing went well. We posted the 3rd fastest time in class for the weekend. That's a pretty good result at Daytona where aerodynamics play such a big role. The 'flying brick' aero of a Mini is a serious handicap. That all being said . . . it was really cold and the supercharged cars LIKE that. I also suspect many of the teams were 'sandbagging' so the real test will be this week. We practice and qualify on Thursday... race on Friday. I am feeling good about the race. The test proved we can run with the fastest cars and that is a first for us at Daytona. The race strategy will be to stay out of trouble and be there to fight at the end. This race is 3 hours so lots can happen. Last year, I was top five at the driver change at the half way mark. The second driver went off a few laps later and the clutch slave cylinder failed. It was probably damaged in the off road excursion. This year, Owen will take the wheel at the driver change so we will have the fastest driver in for the close. My job is to stay in the hunt . . . Owen's job is to close the deal. Sara and VJ have the same plan. So with a little luck ... I'm heading to Florida on Tuesday. We will be at the track on Wednesday. Randy
How did the tire situation turn out? If I remember right you said earlier that you thought Conti might have made a deal with Hoosier. So, Conti branded Hoosiers or something else?
The Conti's and the Hoosier's are the EXACT same tire . . . just the branding has changed. Hoosier makes them under contract for Continental. We will not be allowed to run the Hoosiers anymore so I have some tires I will unload cheap if anyone is interested. 225/45/15 . . . both rains and slicks. -R-
Post the tires here...http://www.motoringalliance.com/forums/55/58/ please. Will be easier to find and get picked up by search engines too.
Thanks Eric. As some may have noticed, Helix has been added a team sponsor. They helped with some performance parts for the cars and it is much appreciated. Randy
