I was an army brat, it was my dad who served. He said many times, "No kid of mine is going in the army!" So I didn't. Dave
Navy - 22 years. Shore tours mostly on the east coast, but almost all sea time in WestPac/IO/Arabian Gulf. One stint out of White Beach, Okinawa.
1st stint 1972-77 18D3W7PF (Special Forces Medical Sergeant Scuba Linguist) Ft Polk, LA, Ft Benning, GA, Ft Bragg, NC, Ft Lee, VA, Ft Sam Houston, TX and overseas deployments with the 5th SFG(A). 2nd stint(after college at UTSWMCDallas-BS/Physician Assistant). 1986-91 CW2 PA Ft Bragg, NC Ft Campbell, KY Ft Davis, Panama Ft Hood, TX. Combat Operations: Operation 'Ernest Will' Persian Gulf(Persian Gulf Yacht and Aero Clubs), Trained mujahedeen Guerillas fighting the Russians(their Viet Nam) Pakistan/Afghanistan(guess we did too good of a job eh?), 'Just Cause' Panama 'Desert Storm' Saudi Arabia et al. 5th SFG(A), 7th SFG(A), 160th SOAR, (on loan to) US Navy. Combat sea/ground/air time. High, High adventure that I wouldn't give up for anything but living on the ragged edge really does take it's toll psychologically/emotionally speaking. 2 divorces nah, that couldn't be. I used to say, "PTSD, what a bunch of sissies," until I became the biggest sissy of all. My wife(3rd, the one who lead me back to sanity and died recently) once said, " it's a good thing that you guys all joined SF as you would have made excellent criminals." From the mouth of babes................................... Jason
:cornut: HMMMMMMMMMMMM................ASA, lives in Hagerstown, MD conveniently close to Ft Meade, Ft Detrick and the Firm/Farm in VA................enough said there.........................silence. Jason
:cornut: Berlin Brigade Patch, a unit to be very proud of. For the uninformed, this was a small unit(relatively speaking) who was a very thin line standing between us and the Soviet steam roller(how many swarms are there in a hoard :lol. Also, due to treaty considerations, half of the soldiers were 'sheep dipped' meaning that on paper they were clerks etc. but in reality they were spooks and combat soldiers. If an MP, you had a soviet sniper trained on you any time that you were out with your bright white helmet and boot laces. I knew that rum4 would never say this about himself so I 'broke silence' for him. Berlin Brigade, good bunch of troops with a suicide mission.:yikes::yikes: Jason
Thanks Jason. Good thing is I was a Scout (Infantry - recon) so they might not have known where I was at any given time. Jason won't tell on himself but he was in the Elite Green Berets and I would be willing to bet his record has a lot of blacked out lines on it cause in "reality" they never were there even though they probably were. As he was a medic in the SF he is probably more knowledgeable then a lot of nurses and docs...
I did not serve myself, so I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude, respect, and admiration to all who did.
US Army 1971-1977 Fort Knox Kentucky Fort Carson Colorado Fort Wolters Texas Fort Rucker Alabama Fort Richardson/Elmendorf AFB Alaska Never regretted joining, never regretted separating. Did receive some first class flight training that paid off in the long run for which I am truly grateful. Proud to have served.
